Oh, by the way, the 73 Dart shook and rattled at 70 MPH.  Once you broke 75 MPH though, it smoothed right out.  None of the other cars had any problems at those speeds and felt safe and solid.  I never tried any of these on bias ply tires.

Yeah tan top, there are stories, but probably not like you would think.  And all, except for the 105mph last weekend, were many many years ago, never to be repeated again.  Last weekend was a fluke.  I was trying to dry the car off and 60MPH wasn't doing it.  So I punched it till the water cleared.  I forgot how quickly the car speeds up and when I looked down it was one of those  :o moments.  I quickly backed off and got under the limit.

The 73 Dart sounds the most impressive, but the truth was, I was racing to see a dieing friend and didn't really care how fast I was going.  When the cop finally caught up to me (he found the car in the hospitol parking lot) I told him I didn't believe him.  He said the judge wouldn't either and let me go with a VERY strong warning.

The Police Intercepter was a former police cruiser a friend of mine bought at surplus.  We decided we wanted to know just how fast those cops could go.  His was an intercepter model with a certified speedo of 160 MPH and a 460 under the hood.  We burried it once on a wide open road and never attempted it again.

The 1970 Charger at 145+ was actually the most amazing story.  Picked up my brother at Parris Island S.C. in his 1970 Charger and booked it back to VA.  I don't know the milage, but if you map quest Paris Island to Fredericksburg VA, well, we made it in 4.5 hours.  Our average speed was over 120MPH.  Funny thing was, after going that fast for that long, dropping back to 55 MPH made it feel like I was parked!

But like I said, most of this happened when I was young and dumb.  Last weekend was the fastest I've ever had my '68.  Most of the time I just cruise at 50 MPH and waive  :icon_smile_cool:

Oh, and you know the old saying that telephone polls looked like a picket fence?

At 173 MPH, they look like a solid wall!  :scared:

sorry to hear that about you friend   :icon_smile_sad: .    that  460 powered interceptor  sounded an awesome bit of hardware :yesnod:   the run with you & your brother  in the  70 charger  sounded a good one , that is so true running  past 110 for more than a few minutes . any thing  in double digits seems slow  or as you say parked :yesnod:  . thanks for sharing this stuff (Dave22443)

although I can't remember the exact speeds i have been in two of the fastest cars I have been in, I have done 130 in my Honda civic, I had gone 140 in  I can't remember what year of a charger rally with a 400 in it and the fastest i would have to say was a 70 something yellow 6.6 firebird, But also I would like to add I think the last to cars speedo's where off but i know we were going faster then my hondoe 8)..........

P.S. DID ANY OF YOU GUYS CONSIDER HOW OLD AND WHAT YOUR TIRE WAS SPEED RATED AT?  I think when I bought my goodyears for my charger when it was running they told me at sears when they found out I was putting them on a 68 charger, they where only garranteed to stay together, "not come apart on you while going fast", at about 108 mile per hour....... :o Thats why i don't go faster then what my tires are rated for also when rubber just gets old.....

140MPH in a 1971 Jaguar E-type V-12 before I chickened out...H-rated tires on spoke wheels....didn't want to risk it.

128MPH in a '92 Mustang LX 5.0 for 1 hour driving to Cody Wyoming.
I ain't got time for pain, the only pain I got time for is the pain i put on fools how don't know what time it is.

OK, here are my records by vehicle.

1972 Charger SE, 318 2bbl / 904 / 3.23 - 110 mph indicated.  I guess there's only so much air you can suck through a Carter BBD.

1970 Road Runner 383 4bbl / 727 / 3.23 - 130 mph indicated.  It was still pulling, but no tach, manual drums, steering getting light, header collectors rusted out, I decided I really didn't need to know how fast it would go, and figured that any cops within 5 miles could probably hear me coming.

1969 Dart GT 360 4bbl / 727 / 4.10 - 101 mph 1/4 mile time slip (13.40 E.T.)  Limited by gearing.

1984 Horizon 2.2 / auto / ? - 65 mph indicated.  Any faster, and the fins started peeling out of the radiator, but what do you expect for $50.

1969 Mustang Mach 1 428 SCJ / 4 spd / 3.91 - 2 mph (est.).  Some friends got a running start when they pushed me up on the trailer when I picked it up.  Been sitting with a blown motor since 1974.  I saved up enough to build a motor, then I heard that my friend Mike's '68 Charger R/T was up for sale and... it's still sitting there with a blown motor.

1968 Charger R/T 440 / 727 / 3.54 - 5 mph (est.).  Backed it out of the garage onto the lawn when I got it running for the first time since the early 90's.  Still needs a few things before it breaks into the double digits, like brakes for example.

1969 front engine dragster 412 SBC / PG / 4.30 - 145.16 mph 1/4 mile time slip (8.94 E.T.)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5f1wL4hhFg  It'll go faster.   :yesnod:

that mustang wouldn't appear to have the scj
no shaker...
nice though my H.S. buddy i used to race with has a real scj..

Silver68RT

It's a real SCJ - Q code in the VIN got the 428 CJ with a fake scoop, R code got the 428 CJ with the shaker.  Mine's got the Q code.  An axle code of V (3.91) or W (4.30) triggered the upgrade to Super Cobra Jet / Drag Pack, whether the engine code was Q or R.  Mine's got the V on the door tag, the LeMans rods, the little hatchet balance weight and larger degreed balancer, external oil cooler, 1UA crank.  It's the real deal, and it's got all the tags.  It's also got a hole in the lifter valley you could stick your fist through, and you can see the one of the LeMans rods that's bent like a pretzel.

http://www.428cobrajet.com/

From the facts and fallacies section.

9. 428 Super Cobra Jets were available both with and without ram air induction.
True! 428 Super Cobra Jets were available both with ram air induction (identified with VIN engine code "R") and with a standard air cleaner assembly (identified with VIN engine code "Q"). The engine code isn't what determines installation of a Super Cobra Jet engine; it's the rear end codes of "V" (3.91:1 Ford traction-lok) or "W" (4.30:1 traction-lok or Detroit Locker) that make the difference.

Bandit72

Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

yeah i think that's the longest posting you've ever made..
thanks for the pics..
i'd be all over that mustang, the '69 scj that is..
might be kinda' pricey but they make those parts still..
is that charger the one in your sig. silver the silver red one?.
BTW: thanks for the effort.

Sometimes it's not hw fast ya go, but where. I've been in alot of fast cars but the fastest i've ever been was a '85 MPH blast the leangh of Silver Ave. here in san francisco in a '68 Shelby 500. yeah it was early morning. but it's only zoned 35!
BTW i also was a passenger in his '58 Ford high boy "The Hight and the Mighty" powered by a 427 side oiler. i forget how fast but we at an 1/8 mile track anyhow.

Rubberduck

155 MPH on a German Autobahn. The car was a Mercedes 600 SE. I got it for a weekend to test drive it.
Since the Autobahns here are always so crowded it took me about 25 miles before I reached that speed
only for a few seconds and I had to slow down again.

Yeah, common sense kind of left the building when I saw that Mustang.  I'd just bought my house, and I could NOT afford it, but I bought it anyway.  A buddy found it in a garage in Dearborn, where it had been sitting under a tarp since the original owner blew the engine street racing it in 1974.  It's only got 24K miles on it, and it's got one tiny pinhole by the tail lights, a couple of crusty spots on top of the inner fenders, and that's it for rust, but it's got a lot of dents.  For a Michigan car, that's unheard of.  The streets look like the Bonneville salt flats here in the winter.  Original paint, no bondo, mint interior.  He threw out a lot of stuff that's expensive to replace, like intake and exhaust manifolds, carb, air cleaner, bellhousing, fuel pump.  It's got a '67 GT500 dual quad setup, so he cut out the underside of the hood to clear the air cleaners, with headers, electric fuel pump, Lakewood scattershield, traction bars, etc.  Ever since that GT500 went for $200K a couple of years ago at B.J., prices for CJ parts shot through the roof.  $700 for a fuel pump?  Come on!  That part sucks.  Maybe not hemi territory, but painful.

The Charger R/T, from what I can see, was silver, with a vinyl top (black I'd guess) and a red interior, 440 4-speed.  Fender tag and broadcast sheet are both missing.  Along the way, it was painted red, then primered over, and I think there's a lot of bondo in the rear quarters.  They hacked out the 4-speed hump, and screwed in an automatic section of tunnel, but left the 4-speed pedals.  The interior was spray-canned black, but you can still see a lot of red where the black's worn off, or something was covering it.  Someone hacked out the center of the core support, probably to get the original engine and trans out.  It's now got a '78 440 / 727, but the Dana 60's still there.  Overall, really solid looking car, but I'm sure it's going to need quarters, wheel wells, and rear valence.  I'm gathering parts, and I got it running, but it's got a long way to go.  Brewer's has my Hemi 4-speed for a rebuild right now.

tan top

two real good cars you have there :yesnod:  ...when finished the 68 R/T will look awesome in that color combination of  silver paint  red interior & a black vinyl top :yesnod:  & may be a black or white may be even a red  tail stripe :icon_smile_wink:

not knowing a lot about Ford hardware . but the stuff i have seen , ford seem to offer  more than a few  different performance packages with various engine combos , kind of confusing to a none ford guy.             thats one awesome mustang & a 4 speed too :drive:

would not mind owning that one .

hmmm so thinking about it and realized that hubby and I did 110-120 all the way out here to Cali (from NJ).  He was driving his chevy beretta z-28 and I was driving my dodge Neon (with my daughter who was 1 1/2 at the time in the car, and my bird and plants).  That was very scary for me though because I nearly got run off the road by an 18 wheeler.  I was in the fast lane and I guess he didn't see me and came into my lane.  I had to swerve to aviod being hit and I ended up in the grass median.  Luckily it was like 5 car lanes thick because it took me the whole median to get my car to slow down and stop.  I almost was in oncoming traffic before I could stop.  Hubby called over the CB to see if I was ok and took after the truck to get licence plate and he broadcasted about the truck over the CB also.  No one was hurt luckily, but I still have flashbacks whenever I drive next to one (and it has been almost 7 yrs).
