727 tranny pump/input shaft removal

I've heard of different ways of removing the front tranny pump and input shaft/clutches assembly on a 727, and I was wondering if both methods are safe.

One way is to removed the front tranny pump housing bolts, take off the tail shaft housing, governor, the valve body assembly, front band, etc. And then, stand the tranny on the bellhousing with the output shaft pointing straight up in the air, then take a 2x4, rest it on the top of the output shaft, and give it a  couple light raps with a hammer. Then the whole input shaft, clutchassemblies, etc, will just pop out with the front tranny pump and you can continue tearing down the tranny from there.

The other way is to get some slide hammers, and screw them into the front pump, and pop the pump out that way.

Is it unsafe to use the first method? I don't have any slide hammers.

The slide hammer method is what is called out in the shop manual.   I have a short piece of 2X4 that I use.  It goes across the bellhousing and then there are a pair of holes drilled in it spaced apart them same distance as two of the bolt holes across from one another on the pump.  I then have two pieces of threaded rod that go through the holes on the 2X4 and into the pump.  A couple of flat washers and nuts on the rod to press against the 2X4 and draw the pump out is the next step.  Cheap and sleazy but it works.

slide hammer is the best way

BUT

if you get two bolts that will screw into the two bolt holes (so they fit the pump and not the housing bolt hole) that are at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions, you can use a impact ratchet and tighten the bolt slowly rotating between the two.  this will actually raise the pump from the housing.  the down side, the bolt will most likely create some aluminum shavings from grinding on the housing, not many mind you.  As long as you clean the housing really well and lift the pump very slowly, it will not create a major issue.

I have actually done this for many years prior to receiving my slide hammers ( I made them myself).  Just a little cleaner doing it with hammers if you know what I mean, but that is the only difference in my opinion.

Though effective... not the best way.. you could ding up your drums causing an imbalance of your rotating assembly, or worse  :o.  Better do this on a pillow :D
