Ok, why do people that want to build GL clones get flamed, but its perfectly alright to build a Daytona Clone?
Also 3rd Gen Daytona (never actually realised), its ok to modify the looks of a 3rd gen to look like a daytona, but do anything else and you get shouted at??

This board has a great variety of cars and members. all Chargers, so why start mini wars over how someone elses Charger looks?

As long as it has only 2 doors its a Charger right?

Lets all be friends, and stop bashing people who want to make a statement in thier lives by owning one of the greatest cars ever built.

No, I'm sorry but you're wrong.

Just because it has two doors doesn't make it a Charger.  The 75-77 Chargers had two doors, and so did the 83-87 model.  These cars, however, do not seem to be considered Chargers.  It seems that only the first three generations of the car have earned the right to the name, and even a couple of them are suspect according to some members of the second gen crowd.

Be very careful what waters you tread.

As to what everyone is doing with their cars, all I have to say is that if someone wants to do something creative with their car, more power to them.  It's their car, their way of expressing themselves, and none of anyone else's damn business.  I used to have some negative feelings about all the clones, but, I've since grown up and seen the light.

I do have my preferences for how to restore a car.  I happen to like stock or slightly  modified stock.  I will not, however, tell anyone how they must restore their car, or like some people, what mistakes they made on theirs, or what they shouldn't do.  I've had that happen to me too many times.  If I decide that I want to put a 70 woodgrain shift knob in my 66 Charger to match my steering wheel, that's my business.  It isn't a 100 point show car, and never will be.  If 100 point show cars are what interest you, great!.....but don't force your preference on someone else.

Someone else's project isn't my business.  Let's all be happy that at least it isn't rotting away in a field somewhere.

There are members here that express their feelings on the GL clones, true, but I rarely see them get flamed. I feel a General Lee clone even though it is not something a lot of members would do to their car is still respected and most (all) members can see the fact that there is also another Charger under that paintjob. I think you are exaggerating this a little bit.

Btw I don't care what someone else does to their car, because well it is their car. I might have feelings about how they treat it (hate to see a Charger rotting to the ground for no reason) but it is still their car. I have more problemns with someone letting a Charger rot than someone restoring it to a General Lee (which is not my personal favorit but hey each to each own)

Ok, why do people that want to build GL clones get flamed, but its perfectly alright to build a Daytona Clone? Because a Daytona is a genuine piece of Chrysler built history with a race pedigree and the chances of owning a real one are slim. The GL is nothing more than overblown TV hype and anyone with orange paint can own one.

Also 3rd Gen Daytona (never actually realised), its ok to modify the looks of a 3rd gen to look like a daytona, but do anything else and you get shouted at??

This board has a great variety of cars and members. all Chargers, not necessarily. I know of a couple of members here that do not own Chargers but are interested in them so why start mini wars over how someone elses Charger looks?

As long as it has only 2 doors its a Charger right? If Chrysler called it a Charger...it's a Charger regardless of what anyone wants to believe or think or how big the engine or number of doors. The post '74 Chargers, including the newest version, are just as much a 'Charger' as the 66-74's regardless of anyone's personal preference

Personally I think I'll get flamed for my comment but here it goes:

I like all the clones out there except the ones that are cloned R/T's! All an R/T has different is trim, engine, etc yet still looks the same except for a few badges, trim, and interior pieces. I really have nothing against them, I just feel that you don't need to clone an R/T since it's the same basic car. A Charger to a Daytona is something completely different in looks, and a GL "clone" is just a paintjob and a few extra parts so can you really call it a "clone" in the same sense as cloning a daytona. If you paint your charger black is that immediately a "Bullitt" clone? How about green with a black stripe?

I'm all up for people painting their cars however they want, add a newer engine and such, etc. Sure I might say that I dislike the ricer wheels on that car but it's their choice, even with cloning an R/T.

I am not a fan of the GL cars, but if it's your car, then it's yours and more power to you.  although I wish anyone who wanted one would buy one of the several that have to be out there now.  where I draw my own "pissed off"  line is when people do the following:

-crank them out in a factory just to sell them and make money. Hlpag and even the others who do nice ones.  are gl's worth that much more than regular nice paint chargers?  I don't know, maybe they are.  Teh exception I would make is someone making one to fill an order, ie: a builder who does them when a specific person wants one.  I just don't like hlpag buiding them on spec.

-cut up a 68 or a 70 to do it.  why?  as annoying as it is to see the wrong year done gl style, at least it's reversable.

According to www.dictionary.com:
-a person or thing that duplicates, imitates, or closely resembles another in appearance, function, performance, or style: All the fashion models seemed to be clones of one another.

So even though the R/T clones might have little difference to the regular Chargers it is still a clone as it imitates, or closely resembles the R/T in appearance, function and performance...

I like clones.  (As long as they've got honest VIN tags & owners).  R/Ts, GLs, Daytonas . . . I like most anything that involves restoring a nice Charger but not hacking it up.

Let's face it, the Dodge Charger isn't fondly remembered by the culture as a column-shifted 318.  Might as well embrace the restorers who wanna add a few extra 440 Chargers to the earth these days.  And the fact that any model can be converted to a 440 or a Hemi means a LOT more Chargers will be saved & restored overall.  If you had to start with an R/T to build an R/T, then we'd all be bidding against each other for the same few $100,000 Chargers left on earth.  I think I like the hobby better with a lot of R/T clones.

General Lee vs Daytona?

I think that's a matter of two different generations of car owners.  GL fans think of Chargers a little more like rough-&-tumble used 70's street machines, whereas Daytona fans like to remember Chargers more in the form of cutting-edge new race cars.  Those are two different ideas about the car's place in automotive history.

And the GL thing has other issues working against it.  The cheesiness of the show, the couple hundred wrecked Chargers it produced, the sudden burst of recent replicas, the fact that people constantly identify ANY 2nd-gen Dodge Charger with the GL, etc.  Even as a major GL fan I can see why some Charger guys have gotten tired of it.

In my opinion you can do what ever you want, its your car after al..

Personally I do think there are enough GL and clone Daytonas. How ever I do understand that someone would want to build a Daytona, but a General Lee :image_294343: -I dont get that at al...

How ever I am not building my Charger to become a perfect stock condition car. I'm building my Charger into a 1/4mile Race car, and my guess is that some people think thats wrong to. Then again I'm not cutting it up and it can be restored close to original, accept for the original drive train thats long lost... But I'm building my car to become my own personal dream car, and if someone doesn't like that, well -F..K them! So I guess that goes of us al what ever we choose to build, a GL, a Daytona clone or a race car...

It's a matter of numbers for me.

I can't stomach the paint scheme on Gls as it is. Then multiply it by the fact that people are making them out of other years, even 3rd gens and it's too much to bear.

Daytona clones? I'll venture to say there are a lot fewer Daytona clones out there.

I'd like to buy a bone stock, 100 point, has every chalk & crayon mark, trailer queen, Hemi R/T Charger, & bolt a chromed, chain link steering wheel & a set of air shocks in it.  :D

People should do whatever it is to make them happy & enjoy their cars, just like the kid who throws a fart can, a top fuel wing, & a dozen stickers on a Honda.   ;D

I don't disapprove of the General Lees or any other replica so long as the VIN tag isn't swapped.
