exhaust manifold sleeve nut question

Ok, I am in the process of repainting my exhaust manifolds since the factory coating that Year One put on them rusted through and I came across a new package of exhaust manifold sleeve nuts that have a threaded hole in the hex head part of them.  My current ones that I have on the engine now do not have these threaded holes in them.  Were the original ones supposed to have the threaded hole or be a solid hex head on the sleeve nut?  This is for a 69 Charger with a 383 HP engine.  I know 1970 models used a heat shield on the driver side manifold which would explain why there would be a threaded hole in there.  I just want to make sure that I put the correct retainers back onto the car and not have to do double the work.

Thanks in advance.

Brian, I have an original sleve nut with the threaded hole on the end. It is the same size (5/16 fine thread) on both ends. I have seen replacement ones that look to be 1/4 threaded on the nut end that are wrong. I don't know why they came threaded. On the 70 and up manifolds theres are bosses cast into the manifold that the heat shield bolts to. Ron

Brian,
Talk to Frank Badalson over at Roger Gibson Restorations. He'll hook you up with the correct studs. They should be open & threaded on one end, not closed up like some of the other "incorrect" repros.

the solid nuts are correct until after 71 the later years had the threaded holes in the end & I believe the ones Mopar still sellls have the threaded holes in the end to work for all applications
