Guys,
I have a 71 Charger RTwith bucket seats and a 4spd, with a short-handled pistol grip shifter in it.
I also have friends with 71 B-body 4spd cars and most of them have the short-handled shifters in them.
But I have also seen many 71 4spd cars with the long-handled, '70 style pistol grip in them.
Some have suggested that it's a bucket seat vs bench seat thing, but I have seen both shifters in both seat configurations!
What gives???

John_Kunkel

The seat style dictates the shifter used, buckets use a different shifter than bench or buckets with a center seat.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Yes Bench seat had the longer shifter and was also mounted forward on the trans mounts

And the Buckets had the shorter with the rear mount

hmmm... so, any bucket seat cars that have a long-handled shifter is incorrect ???

such as this....

JohnnyBee

Yep, thats a bench seat shifter. Many people seem to swap out the seats but not the shifter. To do it correct, you need to have the shifter hump moved back and longer shifter rods.

No that shifter is in the correct spot for both bench seats and buckets that have the center 'buddy' seat. It would be in the rear position for bucket seats with or without a console.

so they actually used 2 different 4 speed "humps"  ???
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

Yes they did. (Locations) The Bench seats also sits higher than the buckets. Because you move the whole seat (bench) forward and back (also with buddy seat) they use a forward mount on the trans with shorter rods. The longer shifter alows to go over the seat when it move up for shorter leg drivers.

This is also needed to know if getting carpet for a '71 B-body ad they need to know for the correct hump location.
