HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - A commercial for Snickers candy bars launched in the Super Bowl broadcast was benched after its maker got complaints that it was homophobic.

The ad showed two auto mechanics accidentally kissing while eating the same candy bar and then ripping out some chest hair to do something "manly." One of the alternate endings on the Snickers Web site showed the men attacking each other.

The Human Rights Campaign and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation complained to the maker of Snickers, Hackettstown-based Masterfoods USA, a division of Mars Inc., which also makes M&M's and other candies.

The Web site also featured video of players from the Super Bowl teams reacting to the kiss.

"This type of jeering from professional sports figures at the sight of two men kissing fuels the kind of anti-gay bullying that haunts countless gay and lesbian school children on playgrounds all across the country," Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese said in a statement.

GLAAD spokesman Marc McCarthy said Tuesday the group believed "this kind of prejudice was inexcusable."

Masterfoods spokeswoman Alice Nathanson issued a statement in which she said the company would stop running the ad on television and the Web site.

"As with all of our Snickers advertising, our goal was to capture the attention of our core Snickers consumer," Nathanson wrote.

"Feedback from our target consumers has been positive. In addition, many media and website commentators of this year's Super Bowl commercial line-up ranked the commercial among this year's top ten best. USA Today ranked it 9 of its top ten picks," she continued.

"We know that humor is highly subjective and understand that some people may have found the ad offensive. Clearly that was not our intent," she wrote.

Masterfoods brands include Uncle Ben's rice, Pedigree dog food and Whiskas cat food. It is part of Mars Inc., a family-owned company.

Our countries society is becoming an embarrassment! I seriously doubt that anyone, regardless of sexual orientation, could find anything offensive in the (humorous) commercial - except for the psychotically extreme minority. Unfortunately, the extreme/fringe minority wins everytime nowdays.

When and how did we (as a country) become such pusses?

As a side question, who here found the add offensive, unacceptable, or in any way derogatory towards gays? And if so, when did being a heterosexual (with normal, -- even though as presented by the add, an animated and funny natural response to the situation --, become a source of ridicule and censure?

I, for one, am at a loss as to the backlash.

Wow, better not eat it, you might turn gay, or perhaps beat up someone who looks like Liberace because you're worried he might force you to hate women.

I always liked Snickers on those rare occasions I wanted candy, but now I'm filled with all kinds of self doubt.  :shruggy:

They have a problem with the way the players reacted to seeing the commercial.

Last I checked, they're not going to be able to control people's natural reaction.

What are we coming to? Stoping everything that is meant as a joke so as to appease a handful of people? I mean come on lets be real here. What is the % of people that are homosexual? I'm going to say around 4-8% of total population.

Then again we do the same things for all the minorities if they yelll foul play. I'll get off the soap box now and enjoy a snickers.

I like this statement:

Just goes to show that the majority no long rules. Always learned "majority rules, minority rights" in school as to the basic functioning of any democracy. Now the special interest groups have both more rights than the norm, i.e. more attention and funding, but also by these outbreaks also control the majority. Being politically correct will eventually remove all forms of free speech as no matter what you say will offend some group in some way.

Andy Rooney has some dynamite statements on this very topic of special interest/minorities and the running of popular opinion.

As a person who has many gay friends I can tell you that they were NOT offended. They thought it was funny as I did.  People need to get a life and work on issues that WILL HELP humankind. IE foster a child, donate time to a church/charity/club that helps the masses. OR donate money or food to the needy/homeless. BUT most of all gwt a sense of humor!!!
