Louder- 2 1/4 vs 3 inch exhaust

I know the size of pipes will allow more sound and flow, but will it be a significant increase if I change my 2 1/4 inch pipes from the manifolds back to 3 inch with 3 inch same type mufflers in terms of amplified exhaust note/sound and freer flow and also help to eliminate that choking feeling of when I let it decelerate on its own?

I am concidering headers and also thinking I should leave enough alone because the don't leak or overheat the starter or plug wires, although I know headers will also unleash some sound and help out my flow, but would it just be easier to put on a new set of 3 inch pipes and bigger mufflers to compensate for both gripes??

Installing 3in pipes will help nothing on a stock or mild built 440, it will change the sound out the back but
will it be much of a change? not sure. Plus many on the site have noted problems with clearance with the
3in pipes hitting things going over your diff so clearance can be a problem to consider.

A 21/4 in compression bent exhaust system is pretty restrictive. A 21/2in mandrel bent exhaust system with headers and an x-pipe would be a significant improvement over what's on there now. That type of system would be good for a 440 in the 520hp range. A 17/8 x 3 header would be the best choice in this power range.

I agree, using a 2.5" system mandrel bent will flow great on a mild 440 3" is overkill & may actually lose power & milage due to lkoss of velocity & scavenging
