have what i think is the correct length driveshaft fits fine,the problem is the needle bearing caps are to big for the rear end.  need some help on this one.

have a 440/727auto/8 3/4

so , you are saying the yoke on the chunk is of the smaller version??  (IE:7260 vice 7290 UJ)

are the caps to wide to fit the yolk or too big in dameter to fit in the yolk?
there are 2 sizes of U joint 7290 large & 7260 small , the caps are the same diameter but the 7290 is a wdier joint , Precision  has a conversion joint 7290 1 way & 7260 the other which may solve your problem

lost me on that one.the cap is too big to fit into the groove and the retaining c clip that bolts in the u-joint doesnt even come close to fitting.
