Car stance?

I know the trend seems to be the lower the better, but I want to set up my 68 with a higher stance than stock (like pictured below)
What did they do back in the day to get that higher stance besides air shocks? I would recurve the rear springs but are there any problems with cranking up the torsion bars?

Well since it's my car I will step in. In 1979 when these pictures were taken in the rear are Gabriel Highjackers (air shocks).  To get the same effect w/o air shocks and to really plant the rear tires I installed Super Stock springs from Direct Connection (remember?). To level the front to rear just crank up on the torsion bars with an impact gun. Don't forget to have the front end aligned after doing so though. You can use a 3/4" breaker bar (ratchet) but it takes a while and your arm will go numb. Believe me.   ;)

I'm running the super stock spings which is great for low speed and jack rabbit starts...    :yesnod:
but not so good for a highway ride as the rear wont soften the bumps...   :'(
and high speed stability suffers immensly.

if my car had the front of the r/t  raised an inch,.. up at speed cruising with the quarter mile SS springs on it?  i wager it would be undrivable above 100 MPH...  :P

i'd infact like to switch to the original XHD springs...

   just my thoughts...

Oh yes! The front end would sway back and forth if someone walking by on the sidewalk farted. Then again the front tires were of a 78 series and the shocks were Gariels drag shocks set to 60/40 I think. You could use KYB gas shocks and a 50 or 45 series tire to help in the stability department (with tons of ugly tire clearance) but any car set up like mine was was by no means a canyon carver. It was set up to "shit & git" from a traffic light. Weigh your priorities and set yours up accordingly.

i agree with rolling thunder......too much rake. would rather see the back lower..... not jacked up to the high heavens...imo

me too plus they drive WAY better when they arent jacke way up!
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

I like em all!  I really like the huge rear tire look myself.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?
