Hey guys, I'm starting to think about what color I want to paint my sport satellite. I really like black, but I was also thinking about a non-original gun metal color, like A4 but I would like it darker. I was also thinking about a dark red color I forget the paint code for that one. I have noticed on newer cars that if they are painted a darker color any scratches are more obvious. If my car was primed with a black primer would I have this problem. I want the paint to last a while.

In 1968 PP1 was the dark red code. This is not the best shot but my dad's '68 GTX is PP1 red.

Black would look real good. If you keep it clean.

yea, I love black too, but I'm going to be driving this car almost every day (at least I hope to) so I'm concerned that any scratches on the black paint will be very noticeable, or at east more so than other colors. Anyone know if this is true?

RogerDodger

There are some wax/polish that are colored to match the paint. Supposed to fill in small scratches and make them less noticeable. I used a blue one before on my truck. It did work. Not miracles.

If you want a color that does not show scratches I would stay away from any darker colors(I.E. black, red, dark blue etc. A silver or the gunmetal would not be bad for hiding dirt and scratches IMO.

My Challenger is going to be a driver type car and white is what I am going with. I have watched Vanishing Point enough times to see the color from every angle.  ;D

If you choose a darker color, especially black, better have your bodywork perfect or it will show.  Its really not a good color choice for a true daily driver.  The gun metal would be a much better choice for that.

So far it seems like I should go with the gun metal color. I can only see a little piece of the paint on your car in your avatar but it looks something like the gunmetal color, but then again its just a little piece and its hard to tell. Anyone have any good pictures of cars in gun metal type colors?

I always liked silver on a Satellite or GTX.

I was thinking of a color darker than a true silver. Anyone got any pictures of a car done in gun metal? I think one of the paint codes is GA4.

I am pretty sure this is the factory gunmetal grey for 1971. My dad bought one like this new.

I really like that, any idea what the paint code is? What are some 1968 paint options that will weather pretty good? Sorry for all the questions...and thanks for the help, this really is a great site.

What color interior does you car have?  I always try to match that when choosing what color to paint a car, unless you plan to replace or re-dye everything I would make sure they look good together.

This link gives you all the codes for 1968 and many other years.

I don't see a grey for 1968.

There are 2 grey colors for 1971.  They are A4 and A8.....I am trying to figure out which one the GTX is right now.

Edit: I think the GTX is Winchester Grey after looking at a few other pics.

Black paint and hoping scratches don't show? You don't want black...trust me.

If you do go with a darker color or any color really have your paint supplier tint your primer to match the final color. Then if there is a deep scratch it won't be as noticeable as if the primer was gray, white, black etc!

Scott - Did you forget where you live, it is Tuscon AZ, remember it gets about 113 deg and no humidity, you will feel like roasted chicken in a Black Color car  :flame: when it hits 113 and the body of your car reaches 150 deg. I have a white driver and every summer I put a cooking thermometer in the dash to check the temps and there has been a few days it was above 155deg when I got in it. The car came in white didn't it, even if you don't like white, stay with a lighter color, if not you will regret it.

Nick, I did think about that, I haven't lived in Tucson for 3 years and I guess I have forgotten (even though I visit 3-4 times a year) how hot it gets. The thing is I really like the "sinister" look of the darker colors. My car does have AC that I'm leaving in...what about B5 blue (is that right?) its kind of a light looking color. I saw this '69 RR in Tucson that looked really cool (nick, maybe you know the owner), I think it might be a little darker than B5 anyone know what color it is? Heres some pictures:

I saw this car on AZ-Nick's website, does it look like A4, I really like the looks of that car. It even has a black top like my car should.

AZ-Nick

That car belongs to Sam, a good friend of mine, you took the pics at Cactus Bowl on Alvernon. His color is a repaint and it is closer to B7 than the original color which was B5. It is a nice car and he drives it everywhere.......

I think in 71 the dark gunmetal is A8 or GA8,  I'm thinking of painting my 71 Satellite this color...there is a pic of a 71rt Charger in the thread "chicks on chargers" any of you guys feel like bringing the pic over...i'm terrible at stuff like that. Yeah, that 71 GTX is Winchester Gray.  Anyway, IMO, GA8 is a very cool color.

Harlow

Me and my dad saw it as we were driving back after buying my car and stopped at took some pictures, hope he doesn't mind I posted them on the internet. How do you think that color would be in the summer?

AZ-Nick

He told me last summer that he wishes he had air in it.....

Well it was after all the "chicks on chargers" thread...it wasn't too much of a chore looking through the 15 pages to find the picture..
