Ever finish your engine with primer, paint, clear coat?

I guess this is an engine question but it could also be paint. :shruggy: Anyway, I have heard of one guy (who owns a body shop) who decided to paint his engine the same way you'd paint the body. He says it looks a lot better and lasts much longer. I didn't ask him if he uses the base coat/clear coat method or a single stage but I got to wondering if that's something anyone here has done? If so how did it work out?

I painted my plain Hemi Orange. Would clear-coat burn off???

I took the poor man's way and cleaned the engine up by hand and power washed it. I used enamel rattle cans of the turquoise from Summit Racing. They have the mopar engine colors in their catalogue. It came out great. A friend of mine did the same thing on his 69 with the Orange and it has held up for 3 years without any problems. He did not use a primer.  I think I just used a self etching primer on the valve covers since they had some surface rust.

The Hot Rod magazine I am reading now has some engines pictured in it that are almost to gorgeous to be used. They likely got the type of treatment the body shop guy suggests.

My 2 cents

bull, i use acrylic enamal with hardner. painted my 6-bbl engine 17 yrs ago . still looks real nice. when you get engine all together spray it with thinner using spray gun clean it very good. use no primer. you get to much paint on engine it will crack and fall off. all you need is paint.

It's going to be turquoise. Yea, I'd appreciate having that code if you don't mind.

I'll have to ask the guy his exact process. He said the look of it is what's best.

Hi,
Did someone have the paint code for the turquoise engine paint or close? 1hot68 maybe?
The old dupont #4799D didn't work at my local paint shop.

Thanks!

Acrylic enamel as mentioned above out of a gun is the way to go. Just like Ma did.

Is he a Chebby guy?  ;D

It actually doesnt hurt to use some primer on the sheet metal parts, but the adhesion to the cast is better for the enamal without primer.

I have to ask...no primer?  At all?

If you have to fix any pitting on things like the valve covers, oil pan etc. you don't have much of a choice but like 1hot68 said, on the castings just let the enamel fly.

VHT makes spray bomb engine paint in primer, color and clear.
http://www.vhtpaint.com/engineenamel.html

I skipped the primer, but used the hemi orange and clear on my yellow GTX. Turned out real nice other than some dirt in the paint (which is obviously my fault). Seemed to hold up well. I plan to use the same technique on my Cuda motor, although I haven't decided a color.

Not sure what the difference is between VHT and Duplicolor these days since VHT is a Duplicolor brand, and there is Duplicolor engine paint as well.
