I'm pretty sure that these shock mounts are custom, but can someone tell me why they were installed? I cant see where the stock mounts were, and why would they be installed like this?

Charger-Bodie

the original shock xmember probly broke most likly from air shocks so someone fabbed up that one ....that would be my guess
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

I agree, that's not the stock mounting crossmember, but it looks as though the shock angles are pretty much the same as stock, and it looks stronger than the stock unit, so I don't see any problem from a functionability standpoint. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're into originality, in which case reproductions of the stock crossmember are available.

As for the question of why? The stock units were weak, and prone to bending, cracking, or rust.

:agree:  :yesnod:    strong bit of hardwere , better than stock i would say, when you have a close look at a stock rear shock mounts they really are flimsy ,considering what the are for .

I meant to, but forgot to mention in my first post, that you should do something about the closeness, possible rubbing of your fuel line. It looks like a guaranteed problem in the future.

Auto rust makes replacement H/D shock crossmembers a bit of welding involved  ..easy job.

I agree with the above comments.  That home-fabbed setup looks stronger than the stock crossmember and it's probably close enough to the stock one's dimensions that it'll work fine.

Unless the welds look totally boogered & weak up close, I'd probably just leave it alone.

We did this same type thing many years ago on a low budget drag car. The original member was rotted and bent from air shocks.  We cut out the old and made a new one very similar to this.  One thing we did change was the shock angle.  We stood the shocks up as vertical as we could. This shortened the shock neutral hight.   This works great as long as you aren't trying to fit tailpipes in the factory spot.

The spring went in one week and the member the next. It made a huge difference in hooking up at the track. Of course allot of that was just getting a good set of 50/50 shocks on it..  Before the new shocks and their new location we had trouble with wheel hop. All gone with the new set up..
