Right now the one 'current' band I'm digging is Avenged Sevenfold. Remember that annoying "wannacharger" kid that got banned? I hate to admit it, but he was aright about AX7. They play decent melodic stuff and at times remind me of old school GnR. They may be too commercial for some, but I like them - then again, I've always been a sucker for Maiden-style dual guitar solos.

I haven't heard their stuff, but was told it's like Atreyu. :shruggy:

Just as long as they're not one of these, "let's all dye our hair black and tune our guitars to sad", type of modern metal acts. :nana:

well, apparently they change their sound with every record...but the last one (City of Evil) was more of the melodic hard rock type - think Use Your Illusion-era GnR meets Iron Maiden. Check out "Bat Country", "Beast and the Harlot" and "Seize the Day".

I've heard very few bands in the last 15 years that made me want to buy new CDs or try out a new sound.  I still listen to the same bands I listened to in the 70s and 80s.  Most of what was then considered hair bands, or heavy metal bands, but i also like ballad bands as well as early 60s beach/car songs.  Ozzy, Dio, NightRanger, Deep purple, Black Sabbath, Queensryche, Poison, etc.  My main beef is that just because you play music hard, doesn't mean you should yell the words or rasp them out.  I'm much more predisposed to groups I can listen to and understand what they are saying.  The music/guitar is primary, lyrics are almost as important though.

:iagree:

Johnny SixPack

Me personally, I don't listen to lyrics.

In fact, lyrics are the last thing I check out, or pay attention to.

So the yelling/screaming/barking/etc. style of singing doesn't bug me, as I learned to tune it out.

Personally, 'operatic' style metal singers bug me more than anything.

I can get into how emo-core singers kinda have the 'pretty' singing breakdowns, but that's pushing it now days.

Found some bands I dig this week:

Knut
Nights Like These
Turmoil
Heavy Heavy Low Low
Ed Gein (yes, like the serial killer)

By "operatic" do you mean lots of/too much vibrato, such as RJ Dio? If so I agree. I'm not really into the Cookie Monster vocals either. I think when it comes to rock and roll the vocals need to stay out of the way of the music. I rarely have much of an idea what the singers are saying and I really don't care to know.

If you like Dragonforce, you should check out another Finnish the band, by the name of Stratovarius. Over here in Europe it was Stratovarius who revived the "Opera" singing style and added the "Lord of the Ring" type hero/adventure lyrics..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratovarius

Another metall band is fronted by a guy named Luca Turilli. His band is named "Dreamquest and later Rhapsody of Fire" This band also was, together with Stratovarius, years before Dragonforce with the "Opera" style singing and hero/good vs. evil/adventure lyrics...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhapsody_of_Fire

And if you want to check out a metall band with an actuall Opera singer singing, check out the band Nightwish..

Wow Man,
Those 3 bands are great. That lineup did not make it to Cleveland I don't think. :rotz:
By the way, as far as I know, Keelhaul are not going to be putting out a new one for a long time.

Speakin' of concert souvenirs....

Ozzfest '97 show at Polaris amphitheater in Columbus, OH - Ozzy's sick, doesn't show.  Well, what's the LOGICAL thing to do?  Riot of course. :yesnod:.  So the place gets trashed, etc, etc, etc (that's another story).  Anyway, I got myself a nice chunk of the retaining fence surrounding the outside of the venue (it was wood). It's about one foot in length.

Fast forward a few years later, my wife got the opportunity to meet the members of Pantera at a meet/great (who were at the '97 show).  She takes this miserable chunk of wood we saved and has all four members autograph it.  Each one of them looked at, paused, looked at her, and said, "what the...?"  So she explains it to them, they smile, and all four signed it.  Philip (who had sunglasses on) looked at her, smiled and said, "Goddamn that's awesome..." then proceeded to write "PHIL."

Still have it....

Unfortunately, I wasn't there( :'(), but from what I understand Phil was somewhat "aloof."  He really didn't say much and just kept to himself.

But I'm a 7 time Pantera veteran with the scars to prove it! :icon_smile_blackeye: :icon_smile_cool:  Some of the most intense shows I've ever been to.

I've heard of Mushroomhead, but don't really know much about them.

Didn't they do the whole mask thing before Slipknot came along and got famous?

Seemed like quite a few mask/costume bands hit at the same time.

Slipknot, Mudvayne, Cradle of Filth...
