OK... I like retro as much as the next guy, and in fact have really dug some of the NWOSR (new wave of southern rock) bands out there, but I think things are going to get lame before they get better.

I don't know if anyone has seen/heard of Dragonforce, but while sitting dumbfounded staring at their current video on MTV's Headbanger's Ball (what should I expect, I guess) I thought to myself, hey... it's like someone did a speedmetal version of Journey.

Kinda like a less tongue in cheek Andrew W.K.

Well, the real point of this thread is to see what metal you guys are listening to right now.

For a while I was stuck in a "70s music rut, but my cousin let me listen to Pig Destroyer over the past weekend and since I've been checkin' out bands on MySpace and iTunes.

Definitely seems like there's some real crap out there (WTF is up with everyone tuning their guitars to the key of sad?), but definitely some kick@$$ music (Every Time I Die, Botch, Sleeper Oh) to be found.

So post up what modern metal you're listening too.

Power Metal, I could see that being Dragonforce's catagorey.

Not knocking their talents, but they're just not my cup 'o' tea.

I do like The Sword, but their version of Power Metal is different.

Overall I guess I'm more of an extreme metal guy.

Maybe rock is having the same problem Hollywood has had for years -- a serious lack of ingenuity -- so they recycle the old stuff. Kind of the same thing we do with cars since everything built these days seems to be a generic sedan with interchangeable emblems. Disturbed recently released a hard rock version of Phil Collins's 'Land of Confusion," which doesn't sound much differnet than the original, Marilyn Manson did a remake of some screwy '80s song I can't remember the name of (maybe it was "Tainted Love") and then someone did a "Boys of Summer" remake just to name a few. I don't know? Maybe they're fresh out of original ideas.

Anyway, laugh if you want but this is what I've been listening to lately: http://www.christianrock.net/ and http://www.christianhardrock.net/index.asp?userid= Very good and very unique. Listen to it and tell me I'm wrong.

Bull, you ever listen to Living Sacrifice, or Embodyment?

They are both (or at least were) Christian Metal bands on a label called Solid State that I believe was Seattle, WA based.

You might dig them.

Embodyment is (I guess the new term is) Emo-Core?

Who the hell knows any more.

But Living Sacrifice is straight ahead metal with touches of Fear Factory.

I probably have and didn't know it. I'll check them out.

Johnny, you mentioned Mastodon in your list above and I'm wondering, is that the Christian band from the '90s or someone else? I've heard the new Mastodon on the local heavy metal station but it doesn't sound like the Mastodon I used to know.

defiance

Couple of examples of some of the 'newer' stuff I think is pretty good... few bands and a good 'example' song from each

-Within Temptation  -- 'See who I am'
-Nightwish -- 'Nemo'
-Dream Theater -- 'These Walls'

I tend toward progressive metal or symphonic metal.  Some of that stuff is technically amazing without sounding pompous.

Bull, no they are a different Mastodon.

Kinda a cross over success now that MTV seems to on board with heavier music again.

IMO Mastodon is a great band with many differing influences (grinding progressions that spiral into intensely heavy sludge, then shoot of into some killer southern rock riff), but they've suffered since the new album.

Seems like they shed a good deal of the heaviness for a little mass marketing appeal.

Definitely still a great band though.

And the album artwork is pretty sweet too.

I've heard very few bands in the last 15 years that made me want to buy new CDs or try out a new sound.  I still listen to the same bands I listened to in the 70s and 80s.  Most of what was then considered hair bands, or heavy metal bands, but i also like ballad bands as well as early 60s beach/car songs.  Ozzy, Dio, NightRanger, Deep purple, Black Sabbath, Queensryche, Poison, etc.  My main beef is that just because you play music hard, doesn't mean you should yell the words or rasp them out.  I'm much more predisposed to groups I can listen to and understand what they are saying.  The music/guitar is primary, lyrics are almost as important though.

I'm mostly stuck a few years back, 70s-EARLY 90s, good ol hard rock and death metal, right now I'm listening to a killer band from the late 80s called Rigor Mortis.  They only lasted a few years but they kick ass!!!  They're from Texas, if you never heard them, check them out if you can find them.   And I like OLD Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Motorhead, Suffication, Autopsy, and the list goes way on!  I don't listen to much new stuff, it just aint heavy enough!  And I can't stand that rap crap! It don't belong in metal I don't think, but some like it and it's a free country.  A lot of what I like are underground bands, real metel will never die!!!

I'll check those other bands later today.

Ever hear of Halfway to Gone?

And it's funny that you mention knowing the guys from Keelhaul.

I actually met the 36 Crazy Fists when I was a bouncer at the club they started at in Anchorage, AK.

Know them pretty well, and they are a great bunch of guys.

Let me and one of the guitarists from the band I was in back in "00 stay at their place for a few months till the rest of our band moved down from AK.

BTW, any chance you might know if Keelhaul is going to be releasing another album anytime soon?

"Subject to Change", has been out for a while now.

Oh yeah, that Lamb of God stuff is good for sure.

Back to Orange Goblin, you like Fu Manchu by chance?

Right now the one 'current' band I'm digging is Avenged Sevenfold. Remember that annoying "wannacharger" kid that got banned? I hate to admit it, but he was aright about AX7. They play decent melodic stuff and at times remind me of old school GnR. They may be too commercial for some, but I like them - then again, I've always been a sucker for Maiden-style dual guitar solos.

well, apparently they change their sound with every record...but the last one (City of Evil) was more of the melodic hard rock type - think Use Your Illusion-era GnR meets Iron Maiden. Check out "Bat Country", "Beast and the Harlot" and "Seize the Day".

Me personally, I don't listen to lyrics.

In fact, lyrics are the last thing I check out, or pay attention to.

So the yelling/screaming/barking/etc. style of singing doesn't bug me, as I learned to tune it out.

Personally, 'operatic' style metal singers bug me more than anything.

I can get into how emo-core singers kinda have the 'pretty' singing breakdowns, but that's pushing it now days.

Found some bands I dig this week:

Turmoil
Heavy Heavy Low Low
Ed Gein (yes, like the serial killer)

By "operatic" do you mean lots of/too much vibrato, such as RJ Dio? If so I agree. I'm not really into the Cookie Monster vocals either. I think when it comes to rock and roll the vocals need to stay out of the way of the music. I rarely have much of an idea what the singers are saying and I really don't care to know.

If you like Dragonforce, you should check out another Finnish the band, by the name of Stratovarius. Over here in Europe it was Stratovarius who revived the "Opera" singing style and added the "Lord of the Ring" type hero/adventure lyrics..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratovarius

Another metall band is fronted by a guy named Luca Turilli. His band is named "Dreamquest and later Rhapsody of Fire" This band also was, together with Stratovarius, years before Dragonforce with the "Opera" style singing and hero/good vs. evil/adventure lyrics...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhapsody_of_Fire

And if you want to check out a metall band with an actuall Opera singer singing, check out the band Nightwish..

Wow Man,
Those 3 bands are great. That lineup did not make it to Cleveland I don't think. :rotz:
By the way, as far as I know, Keelhaul are not going to be putting out a new one for a long time.
Do you like Mushroomhead at all?

Speakin' of concert souvenirs....

Ozzfest '97 show at Polaris amphitheater in Columbus, OH - Ozzy's sick, doesn't show.  Well, what's the LOGICAL thing to do?  Riot of course. :yesnod:.  So the place gets trashed, etc, etc, etc (that's another story).  Anyway, I got myself a nice chunk of the retaining fence surrounding the outside of the venue (it was wood). It's about one foot in length.

Fast forward a few years later, my wife got the opportunity to meet the members of Pantera at a meet/great (who were at the '97 show).  She takes this miserable chunk of wood we saved and has all four members autograph it.  Each one of them looked at, paused, looked at her, and said, "what the...?"  So she explains it to them, they smile, and all four signed it.  Philip (who had sunglasses on) looked at her, smiled and said, "Goddamn that's awesome..." then proceeded to write "PHIL."

Still have it....

Unfortunately, I wasn't there( :'(), but from what I understand Phil was somewhat "aloof."  He really didn't say much and just kept to himself.

But I'm a 7 time Pantera veteran with the scars to prove it! :icon_smile_blackeye: :icon_smile_cool:  Some of the most intense shows I've ever been to.

I've heard of Mushroomhead, but don't really know much about them.

Didn't they do the whole mask thing before Slipknot came along and got famous?

Seemed like quite a few mask/costume bands hit at the same time.

Slipknot, Mudvayne, Cradle of Filth...

I just remember walking into the record store, buying, "Slipknot", and then being stunned once track 2 hit.

Great album.

Hell, I even took my mom to see 'em in "00. :METAL:

She's a percussion fan, so she was into it.

I just remember her asking me, "do they really have to swear so much?"  :icon_smile_big:

Awsome :2thumbs: Ive never realy got to meet any band members :rotz:. I did meet Jamey Jasta (sp?) from hatebreed at Ozzfest in '04. Alot of my friends have hung out with GWAR after all of the 5 shows they played around here recently. I did get a thumbs up and a nod from James Hetfield Kirk Hammett and Lars when I went to see Metallica in Charlotte in Apr.'04. Some buddies of mine found an origional '86 Damage Inc. tour shirt on the floor and gave it to me, so when Metallica played Damage Inc. (the last song of the night) my buddy and I held up the shirt (since we were in the 3rd row) we got spot lighted and got the nods and thumbs up from them. It was so frickin cool, and I still have the shirt along with the 100 or so other music/band shirts.

Wow,
There are some true Metal Heads on the site. I am not for sure who was around 1st, Mushroomhead or Slipknot. I know that I am from Cleveland and was in a local band at the time and played a show with Mushroomhead and that was back in 94' before their 1st self titled CD was released. I have a copy and it is hard to find. I collect vinyl and CD's as well as Mopars.
I would sure love to have a copy of that 1st Slipknot(MFKR) on vinyl. Thanks for postingthe pic, I never knew it even existed.
Mushroomhead are talented and there was this war with Slipknot & Mushroomhead a few years back here in Cleveland. They both played an outdoor show together and the whole hate thing ended. Both bands have a stage show but play entirely different styles of Metal and each can hold their own very well.

I'm tempted to get into collecting vinyl.

Quite a few bands put more out on vinyl than CD.

At least ways that's how it is with the lesser known metal bands.

7"s and split discs seem to be the new cool thing.  :icon_smile_big:
