I stole this off another forum I frequent.
Look at the first picture below and you can see where this guy broke through the guard rail and left the road, traveling from right to left (where the people are on the road).
He flipped across the end of the culvert and landed on the left side of it.

Look at the second picture and you can see how lucky he was.

We had one of the temp drivers roll one of the company dump trucks this past summer right next to lake Michigan. It was one of the new '05 trucks as well with a rock tub on it. They were doing cliff restoration that takes place during normal beach erosion, and he had some dirt stuck in his box after dumping the load. So, he started up the steep hill with the box up hoping the dirt would come out using the laws of gravity. Any good experienced dump driver will tell you, that that is a stupid thing to do 15 feet from a drop off. Well, the temp driver did it anyway, and the rear wheels hit a soft spot, and the truck rolled towards the lake driver's side down, and stopped slidding about 3 feet from going over a 50 foot drop off into Lake Michigan as where the truck landed, was tapered down towards the lake. The driver was alright, but needless to say, got fired for that. I heard it took the tow truck driver just a half hour to back into the curvy tight spot through the trees where our truck was, and 3 hours to upright the truck so it would not slip into the lake.

I have a strong feeling that the photo is not real. In the first close up shot, the chain link fence is close to the truck & appears to be about 20 to 30 feet away. There is also an area showing the ground between the truck & the spot the photo was taken from.

In the distance pic, the fence is suddenly far away & looks as though it's over 100 feet away from the truck, & the ground is now gone.

One last thing, I have never seen the end of a culvert pipe that large just dump off the face of a cliff. A pipe that big is there because the volume of water that passes though it is huge. I seriously doubt any design would allow for a discharge of water big enough to make a waterfall. It would erode the the embankment, undermine the concrete slab that forms the apron/spillway, & eventually wash away the side of a highway.

I dunno about that. I'd say the first pic was taken from about the same distance as the second one, but zoomed in the lens...making the fence look nearer to the truck. If the photographer was down a little low at the time, it would make the dirt "mound" more pronounced too.

For my visual aid here, I give you exhibit #1.
Looking at this shot, one would assume that with the size of the surrounding scenery, this chick is HUGE!



But if you were to look at this same chick from 50 feet away, she would more than likely appear a tad smaller...and that "mound" by the belly button would be much less pronounced.

Looks real to me too. A zoom lense on a camera can really distort the distance between 2 objects.

If the camera man for the first pick was closer and to the left more, then takes a second picture farther away and more to the right, then you'd create the photos you see there.

Example: Take a picture looking straight towards a fence at a 90 degree angle. Then stand with your should up against the fence halfway and take a picture of the fence while looking down it lengthways at a 5 degree angle. Same fence but sure looks different...

I believe that's been edited too.  Look at the guys casually standing between the truck and the edge looking down.  I'd think they'd be a bit more concerned for their safety if that dropoff was as long as it appears in the second pic.

The more I look at it, the more I wonder....

Look at the firefighters in the first pic.  The ones that look like they are either in the process of walking around (the LR qtr) the truck or trying to push it over the cliff.

I understand the reasons argued to say the pic is real, but distance gives the illusion that sizes are different. Having said that, the fence is still the reason I say the pic has been altered. If the fence is definitely as far away from the truck as the unzoomed image, then when it is zoomed in, it should appear much larger than it does in the photo that is zoomed in. The angle that both pics were taken isnt that much different from one another, so I say the fence shouldn't even be in the close up at all

The angles are different though... look at the culvert itself. In the first pic the culver tis full in view, while the second pic shows the culvert partially covered by the concrete wall. Also the fence in the first picture is "straight" meaning the height and the angel of the photographer is different than the second pic where you can see the "corner" of the fence meaning that the photographer is standing closer and higher in the second compared to the first.

Think of the stunt that jets do where they fly towards each other. What the audience sees is two jets coming super close together within inches and almost hitting, whereas if you look from the jet's perspective, they have 20 feet apart.

I know the angles are different, I can see the broken guide rail, the face of the culvert pipe, & the distance the truck is from the pipe, all in relation to one another. That still doesn't account for the height of the fence being virtually the same in both pics. The fence should be huge in the closer image.
