stock exhaust questions

i am on a tight budget right NOW and i cant afford a new exhaust system on my 72 charger. it has a 318 with stock exhaust, which if you haven't heard one has a nice tone but isn't very loud. i want to louden it up a bit. should i drill a hole. i have heard drilled cars, most of them sound bad, bad as in not good. but could i pull it off, would a hole Right after the muffler instead of before make it louder. would the stock manifolds sound good w/o any exhaust, or would they sound like crap. i don't have any laws in my county prohibiting loud cars. could i strait pipe it w/single exhaust. could i get a better muffler, i will spend about 100 bucks if it will really sound good. i know it wont sound as good as hooker headers and duel flowmasters, but how can i make my little exhaust sound big

  Try a glass pack on each side, instead of the mufflers, they deaden the sound down a lot compared to straight exhaust, but will sound good, and they aren't restrictive on flow at all,  I had them on a ramcharger, a dodge pickup, a BMW, and one ton van, and on my Bronco, and they aren't that much dough, sound good, work good, don't cost a lot,  I think they are similar to cherry bombs, but not sure, they are basically a hollow tube, with sound deadening around the outside of tube,   had to put them on my POS 1 ton van because the thing backfired, and the old mufflers were blown up, the exhaust guy said a backfire could't blow up the glass pack, the first pair were still too loud, so we added another pair, had about an 18 inch and a 18 inch one on each side, something like that, in a row, two in a row on each side, it was an extended van, so 3 ft. of glass pack mufflers on each side fit under the thing no problem, 
  My bronco has one cherry bomb or glass pack, about 16 or 18 inches, not sure, it sounds just right, stock exhaust system accept for that, not too loud, but makes it sound a little beefy, even on the single exhaust pipe going out the back right side.  don't know why the van needed that much, was a 360 with dual exhaust and no catalytic converters, the bronco has 351 with catalytic converter, maybe that's why,  anyways, hope this helps.
  I'm gonna guess here, but maybe cut off the mufflers and stick on a glass pack on each side, might need a weld and a hanger, maybe a clamp and a hanger would work though, since they aren't restrictive on flow, they shouldn't be wanting to blow off from the end of pipe  held on with just a clamp,

I forgot, ya, a better example is the 76 dodge 1/2 ton pickup, had 318, 2 bbl carb, stock exh. manifolds, no catalytic converters, dual exhaust with about an 18 inch glass pack on each side, it sounded awesome, sounded like it had a cam in it,

  No doubt, ya, clamps instead of welds have more chance that they aren't completely sealing, run the pipes out past the valiance, fumes can get up under the car, will get inside, even a little, you may not notice it after the first day or two you drive it and get used to it, but it is still getting you, not good

keep in mind it is single exhaust with one muffler, wich is held on by clamps. tell me about those header helper muffler things, the mufflers that attach directly to the headers.

I don't know, but if you do that, you have to worry about running a pipe to the back of car, which will cast the labor mostly,  if you could somehow afford dual exhaust, wouldn't be that much more, don't worry about headers.   With glass packs, it shouldn't be that much, and you would be happy with it, lot better than single exhaust, would sound good
  If you hook a muffler deal to the header, and don't run the pipe from that back, you will have to drive around with the windows down and holding your breath.         avoid prolonged exposure to exhaust fumes, lots of side effects.
   You could just put a glass pack on where your muffler is now, will still sound a lot better, and is cheapest thing to do,

How about a Thrush muffler? I had one on a 1772 stock 318. Sounded pretty good.
