don`t waste your time , I have used 3 of his systems with poor results

Just re-curve it yourself, there's no real magic in an FBO distributor, inmo. Weld up the slots, dial more base timing in and limit the mechanical to achieve the desired results. That's pretty much what FBO does anyway.   :P

:o I was considering a FBO system as well. If one has a stock 70 vaccum adv / points system ; should I stick with that? What would you two guys recommend for a warmed up stocker 440. Warmed up meaning Hughes Engines Muscle Car grind, 6 pak pistons and a 5 angle valve job, everything else stock? My gut was that the stock dist. system was going to be my weak link for getting performance out of the engine combo.

The MP electronic conversion kit will be fine for that application. The new MP distributors that come with the conversion can be modified with a Mallory tuning kit so you can curve your distributor w/o having to disassemble and weld up slots....pretty slick and good value for the money, inmo.

Do you have a part number for the Mallory kit. I see two but each are specific to Mallory dist.

Sendero, hate to try to sell stuff here, but I do have a Mallory Dist for a 440 in the part's for sell section. $40.00 plus shipping.

Sorry Troy  :-X

Ahh, you didn't come here with the intent to sell.  Hey CP, I had thought you were thumbs up on the FBO stuff at one time.  Did you change your mind from using it or am I just remembering wrong?

How are they typically re-curved with the Mallory kit? Just change the springs and weights? What timing are you generally wanting for best results on a 440?

The MP Distributors use mallory internals as of a few years ago. The typical mopar distributor needs to have the plate welded up if you want to dial in less mechanical advance. The plate on the mallory style distributor has provisions for small set screws to be inserted into the plate to eliminate some of the mechanical advance.

Generally, i like 16-18* at idle and 36-38* in at 2500-3000 for an iron headed street driven combo. Depending on the cam, compression and head composition (aluminum) those #'s might change slightly.

Ok got it now. The new MP come with teh Mallory internals so the Mallory kit for adv change fits. I guess I am a bit slow on the uptake. CudaKen, thanks for the offer on the Mallory unit. As I am trying to keep this thing as stock lokking under the hood a feasible it wouldn't fit the decor :icon_smile_big:

Hey Sendero, you're not slow on the uptake at all....i'm just slow on the delivery.   ;) Yes, the mallory kit will work in the new MP distributors as described above.

Thanks for the advice guys.  I have an older MP dist that would need the welding with no access to a welder.......maybe ill pony up for a newer MP unit

the FBO sounds good , higher output coil & faster switching box , the coils seem to Eat ballast risitors & the boxes seem better But 1 has failed already with maybe 200 miles on it & the dist is easily modified so I do my own
