If not MagnaFlows, then what?

So I go down to the muffler shop to look into getting a new system for my '69 383. The guy doesn't give me a hard sell, but really wants me to go with the Flowmaster series 40. I really don't like Flowmasters because of the tinny (to me) sound. Now, I drive around a '98 Mustang Cobra that I put MagnaFlows on. I like the way they perform, and I REALLY like the sound. That's the sound I want on the Charger. He tells me that MagnaFlows don't work well on older cars with carbs. Could this be true, and if so, what do you guys suggest for a muffler?  :-\

I had them on a 96 Trans Am LT1 6 speed and it sounded awesome...  A friend has them on his 69 Charger 440 auto and they sounds perfect to me.  I say get the Magnaflow.

Id say either Dynomax Ultra Flo or Dynomax Super Turbos..

I have the Super Turbo mufflers on my ride, and the sound is a sweet low rumble at idle..

Super Turbos were put on the GTX I built with a 440+6...      sounded AMAZING...    I actually like that sound better then flowmasters...

I ran Hooker Aerochambers on my '76 Cadillac for a while before I tore it down. They sounded great! Really mean, throaty sound. If you want a chambered muffler I would definitely recommend them.

Magnaflow's will be fine on your Charger. Another option is the ultraflow by Dynomax, which is a stright thru design like the magnaflow and slightly louder. Stay away from a chambered muffler (flowmaster) as they are restrictive and will choke your engine. The drone at cruise speed is also very annoying.

Never tried, but heard good stuff from people with them(Magnaflows),perfect sound, not too loud, powerful sounding wide open throttle, but not too loud. Besides, how is the muffler going to know whether your engine has a carb or is injected? Wonder why the sales guy said that!? Do Flowmasters cost more ? LOL

Dodge69_440

Yeah I run magnaflows on mine has a nice throaty idle and not too loud, but when I open her up though it sounds amazing.  Never heard anything about not being able to run them on an engine with a carb.

First of all, you cant really compare a mustang sound to anything, because Mustangs sound so awesome!!!  I have the flowmaster 40's on my dakota I can't complain about the sound I just hate that it rusts out on me real bad (New England winter's)  If your muffler guy tells you to get flowmasters I would get them because he knows the business. Just my 2cents.  Good luck

That doesn't make any sense to me. I wonder what his explaination is.
I have had flowmasters and Dynomax.  I could barely stand the drone from the flowmasters while cruising.  I am sure magnaflows would be nice, and I am pretty happy with Dynomax.

Dyno Max works best, still get the mopar sound without the head aches. Performance is what counts.

My guess is that a carbed engine can backfire, thus blowing up a chambered muffler.    A backfire can blow up a chambered muffler, I know that, but I am guessing that a carbed engine can backfire,   and that an engine with fuel injection won't backfire?  I don't know.

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

Because he's trying to sell Flowmasters.  His shop probably has a deal going with the Flowmaster company.  Even if he knew that Flowmasters don't perform as well as other mufflers he's not going to tell you so.
Also, don't forget that just about every car fan thinks of Flowmaster as the ultimate mufflers-not too many people know the truth...

HITMAN 149

i have flowmasters on my 68 r/t (already on it when i picked it up) but i think they sound cood...so far!!! hahahaha
ans i agree with roscoe... i had a 88 gt...and you can always tell when a mustang is comming down the street!!!! they just have such a disticnct sound!!!!!!!!!
