Hi All! It's my first post...I just ran into this site. Its great to be able to chat with other people who love Chargers and know so much about them!

I have a 68 Charger with a 440, and I was doing a lot of reading on this site hearing a lot of great things about these "stroker kits".

Can anyone explain to me what a "stroker kit" is and what it generally entails? Does a stroker kit mean you use a different crankshaft to get a longer stroke or something? Just wondering if anyone can give a newbie an overview of whats involved. Thanks!

Welcome Jamie

A"Stroker" is like you guessed; installing a crank with longer "throws" in your engine. The result is more displacement and more torque. It is usually the inexpensive power alternative for people with low block 383's or 400's installing a 440 crank to turn their engines into a 426 or 451 respectively. There are stroker kits for the 440 as well but since the crank is custom make instead of an old left over it's a little more pricey.

I'll get off now and let the smarter people have their say...welcome again!

Here's a litle bit more of an explanation too.  I didn't know either but i'm learning as well.   I just thought if you  did that then the pistons would hit the heads.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Thanks guys for getting me rolling - yeah, that is an interesting point. That would make the pistons slap into the head. So, that is why they use the shortened rods then, eh?
  Cool!

acually you use a piston with a shorter compresion height.the piston pin to the top of the piston is shorter to compensate for the longer crank throw.    you can acually use short rods also.  theres aalways a debate about short rod motors compaed to long rod motors.  they both have there pros and cons.
