backing plates or no?

started putting together my front suspension tonight and realized that my old backing plates won't work with my new spindles/rotors...they seem to "stick out" too far in the middle. Does this sound right? What exactly is the purpose of these? Is it to keep brake dust down or what? would it be ok to run without them, or is it one of those "need to have" things?

Thanks Ryan Olson
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

Chryco Psycho

it keeps water away etc , but given most of these cars are barely if ever driven in bad weather I doubt leaving them off would be an issue

BLACKWOLF

i have taken them off of every car that i have owned. it will give your brakes more cool air also.
