brake pedal won't pop up

'66 Charger, manual drum brakes. With the master cylinder disconnected, shouldn't I be able to push down the brake pedal and watch it pop back up? Mine just hangs there.

I would think no.

The pedal will sink to the floor without the master cyclinder holding the pressure on the entire system.

Then again, I could be full of chit.

Well I looked at a 67 dart manual drum brake car in the parts yard and could push the pedal down and it would pop back up. The master cylinder was dry. I just couldn't see what was pushing the pedal back up. Didn't see a spring or anything.

Some may have a return spring connecting the brake pedal to the bracket that retains the pedal itself, some may not.  The 73 Cuda has one, my Charger does not.

just to be sure  , remove ( if not all ready)  hold the master cylinder in a vice , and push the piston in with a screw driver or use the push rod and see  if it springs back ( be careful you don't spray brake fluid every where  )  , it took 2 trys  to get a new master cylinder that worked for mine , different problem though ,

Figured it out. Too much rust and buildup on the pivot point of the brake pedal, making it too hard for the master cylinder to push it up. So I disconnected the cylinder from the pedal and used some good ole WD40 on the pivot point and worked the brake pedal up and down a bunch of times and it seems to have fixed the problem.

Crap, now it appears something is jammed in the brake line between the prop valve and the rear brake hose. I disconnected the brake line at both ends and can't pass fluid through it. I put 100psi to it and still can't get fluid through. Doesn't look kinked. The master cylinder will push fluid out the prop. valve, but when it is connected to the brake line, and the brake line is disconnected at the rear, nothing comes out the brake line.

So what are my options?? I know one option is $150 for new reproduction lines... didn't want to spend that much. Or I could make my own. Do they make brake lines that long? Other option would be to try and clean out or blow out whatever is blocking. Any suggestions there?

Gracias!

Jon,

No, parts stores do not make one piece length brake lines as long as what the factory ones were.  For what it is worth, with the age of the car, you might be better off (and have better piece of mind) with new lines.  After you get this problem fix, some rust or something else inside the line could get freed up somewhere down the road and you will be back to square one.  You could also have a thin/weak spot on the brake line that could rupture one day when you hit the brakes causing you to damage your Charger.  If it were me, I would spend the extra money and just have all new lines with a piece of mind knowing my car can stop.

I use 25' rolls of 3/16" brake line & just flare the ends to make my own lines

FastbackJon

I took off the old line. Lots of rust crud jammed in at the rear connector where it goes to the brake line. I found the weak spot too, went to bend it up to fit it in the trash can and most of it bent fine but one part didn't bend it just snapped, lol.
