Has anyone here shipped a Charger hood before?  More specifically a 71-74 hood...  Im wondering what the best option would be in gettin a hood from the east coast to the midwest.  Driving out to pick it up would be possible but it seems like that would end up costing me more than shipping it.  I dont want it to show up beat to hell either though.

Silver R/T

we have a bunch of shipping companies. Just pack it well and have trucking company ship it.

I shipped a Challenger hood once and I basically built a form fitted wooden coffin for it.  It weighed a ton and it was oversized so needless to say, the guy paid a good dollar for shipping but he figured it was worth it. I can't recall the cost now to have it shipped from midwest to east coast, it was in 1982.

I wasnt sure they would take something that big... Ive used them for large parts but a 3rd gen hood is just HUGE.  How much did it run you?

Im also wondering how to have the seller package it?  Is cardboard and bubble wrap sufficient?  I figure anything is better than nothing but Id rather ask than find out the hard way.

I've shipped many parts from here,Alaska. Through a trucking company. Sadly, I sent a hood to Silver, cost was just under $200.00 for me to ship to Spokane, you'd have to ask him what he paid to return a hood to me, even though it took him almost 3 weeks.  >:( In the lower 48 states, try GreyHound, Fed-Ex,UPS  ground shipping is not as expensive as you might think. Log onto the web site Fed-Ex or UPS do a search in the calculate price for shipping forum. I used a hood box from body shop from a dodge truck, cardboard box, fit perfectly inside for the charger hood. Hope this helps. Just make sure its insured to be on the safe side. Cardboard is perfectly ok, thats how body shops get they're parts, a small % of the time parts are damaged or missing, you should be ok.

I received a 71 hood from Greyhound for around $85.00.  It was wrapped in alot of thick cardboard.  It came from Washington to Michigan.

A hood weighs close to 78 lbs in a box from what I remember.

Greyhounds limit is 100 lbs. so packing has to be minimal. When i had a 71 R/T hood shipped to me via Greyhound, the seller had to remove the insert and ship it seperate to keep the hood under 100 lbs. It was shipped from New Orleans to Atlanta in less than 24 hours, around $100 for the 2 packages. I shipped a 73 bulge hood to South Florida in August. Got there in around 24 hours.   I just taped cardboard around the edges and wrapped it with industrial plastic wrap (kind of like heavy duty saran wrap) that you-can buy by the roll at office depot)   Another thing about Greyhound.... They will ship things shipping charges collect. The buyer pays the shipping charges when they pick up their item at their local bus depot. When i use them thats what i do. That eliminates any potential issues about inflated shipping charges. One turd on this site absolutely refused to send me something that way (shipping charges collect) which i found kind of preposterous....... He wanted $175 ( plus a packing fee)  to ship a hood via greyhound from PA to GA...... when the greyhound website indicated $85 for a 100 lb package.

Sounds like the way to go to me!

I hear a lot of good about Greyhound, but there is no terminal near me so I never used them. There is a trucking company called Forward Air that ships, but it's from their own terminal to another one of their own only. They recommend that whatever you ship is crated to protect it, so that would add to the cost. If there is a terminal near you & also one near the seller, it might be an option.

There is a terminal locater on the site too.

DHL has been good to me & has never rejected oversized packages & crates I've sent. I sent a wooden crate from NY to CA that was 125 pounds & the same size as a casket for about $120 just 2 years ago.

I just had a 72 Rallye Charger Bulge hood sent to me Greyhound from Wisconsin to Michigan. Not that far. Price was around $100.00 I did not pay shipping when picked up but payed ebay seller. Was Dissappointed in how poorly wraped/packaged. Pretty much saran wrap & thin peice of cardboard on edge. This gives the hood about zero protection. Could easily get dented. Sure wouldn't want it dropped or falling over. LEON.

That's what I'm always afraid of...how the seller will ship it. Some people's idea of good packaging can be drastically different than mine. :icon_smile_angry:
A couple years ago, I bought a grille for my Charger. I told the seller to "please package it carefully", which he assured me would. It arrived in a cardboard box, with a few pages of newspaper for stuffing...the box was beat to hell & had holes on both ends. I just about freaked!
The grille ended up broken in one spot, by the hood release handle. I was totally amazed it wasn't in 30 pieces...but it was a repairable break, so I kept it.

I haven't bought anything similar since, mostly for fear of having to pay for a box full of broken/dented parts. :-[

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

If a person ships a 3rd Gen  power bulge hood via greyhound, the packing will have to be minimal. Its that simple. Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, Greyhound has a 100 lb limit. By going the cheap route (greyhound) you have to be sensible and realize that there is some risk of damage because the weight limitation doesnt allow for significant packaging. On the other hand paying someone to build a wooden crate, and shipping the same hood via a frieght company would be much much more expensive. I`ve used Greyhound about 20 times so far with no damge issues, so I feel the value outweighs the potential risk.
