Brakes on the Nascar Daytonas and Superbirds?

  What did they use for the front hubs and rotors for the race daytona and superbirds. I thought I read somewhere they used a more beefed up front brake assembly. Can anyone shed some light on this for me.

                can't remember for sure  but i believe they used  11"x 3" drums with segmented linings  custom hubs with lockheed/air heart mastercylinder

The Circuit Racing Parts Catalog from January 1967 (indirectly on loan to me by Neil Castles) shows the following:

Group 5-02-1  Drum, Brake - Front (11" x 3-1/2") Part Number NC-6665
Group 5-02-1  Drum, Brake - Rear (11" x 3") Part Number NC-6664

I don't know what those part numbers imply, but they obviously don't appear to be a Chrysler part number.  Probably an aftermarket vendor that had a distribution agreement through Chrysler and/or Nichels Engineering.  There are Chrysler part numbers for the brake shoe linings, but not the shoes themselves.

The front and rear brake backing plates had two different versions - a Vented for Road Courses, and a closed style for Oval Courses.

Drum brakes front and rear on a race car that's just scary!

They were much closer to being stock cars back then.  Of course there wasn't a lot of braking on the big ovals anyway.
Now the road courses!

I am trying to keep it as close to the nascar version as possible, Cage, sw gauges, relocation of fuel opening, and cell. Gotta keep it street legal though to go out and have some fun. I am going to use a 64 nascar dual plane intake instead of the bathtub. Thanks for the info. Now if I can just decide on color .!

Just had an idea pop into my head. We could go petty blue on the daytona and I just happen to have an extra rust free '74 Charger lying around.
I say you build a couple of Nascar clones. You'll be the envy of the neighborhood.  Petty...sunglasses...get it.

Brakes were a special heavy duty welded and gusseted brake shoe arrangement.   

After Billy Foster's death while testing a Mopar at Riverside in 1967,  Chrysler developed a better drum brake package that had a Delta shoe arrangement as compared to a traditional left/right shoe like on the street car.   It didn't flex as bad and held up pretty good.   In 2001 at Detroit, Ford's stock car man Charlie Gray looked at a sample brought to the event and congratulated the Chrysler guys on the design. 

None of the suspension or brake parts interchange with street counterparts.  Closest things are the lower control arms which are reinforced from stock appearing pieces.
