I have driven by this car for about a month. it sits in a public park and ride. always the same posistion. So I stopped by today to look at it. all the doors are unlocked, the keys were in the ignition. I started snooping around. I popped the hood and the battery had been clipped out. not unbolted, but the cable had been clipped clean. and the radiator was dry and it looked like it had some wiring issues. but is 4 wheel drive and the engine looks good. and it has some nice mickey thompson aluminum wheels on it. So I grapped the keys and locked it up. I also have the VIN and licease #, can some one help me find out if this is stolen? cause I'd love to return it to the owner, or turn it into my own. I'm really hopeing the police guys can help me.

here is the thing, it is from a differant state, but I see cops in this park and ride all the time, and I don't think the car is stolen , I believe that they have run the tags or vin, bc how stupid would you feel if you had sat next to a stolen car and had lunch or  whatever as a cop? I just want to make good and sure that I don't cross any boundaries, and I don't want to pay to have it checked out bc I don't have the money.  I'm willing to go down and trailer it home, and work for this car, but I can't pay for it with money, just sweat, you know?

I would say call the police.  If you load the car up and take it home without talking to the rightful owner....it is NOW STOLEN....and you STOLE IT.  NOT A GOOD THING.  :rotz:

Shakey

Just take it home and leave a note taped to the ashphalt saying where it is.

 :haha:

Seriously, call the cops, have them run the tag and go from there.  I'm guessing the vehicle broke down and they just left it.
Either that or search the area near by for a body.

good luck, and I hope you get a free 4x.

i'm always afraid of that when i buy a new car :P
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

So you're snooping around in somebody elses car, and then you stole the keys out of it ?  ::)

Go ahead call the cops...you'll get a free stay at the greybar hotel.

Cars like this are found all over the place quite often here in Florida. It normally turns out to be a BUY HERE_PAY HERE gone wrong. The car probably overheated from lack of coolant and he parked it there while waiting for his buddy to come pick him up. He probably had to put a new battery in it and so he figured the dealer owed it to him.. CLIP-CLIP... He left the keys so that the buy here repo man could grab it up without extra charges..

Call the police and possibly the dealer if it has a sticker on the trunk or tailgate..

Like was said before. If you just take it home with you, you are now a car thief and will go to jail...

Go to the dmv and file abandonment papers on it. They will send a notice to the last registered owner and after so long(30-60 days or whatever) if the owner doesnt respond or claim it you can "claim it" for the cost of registration and other paperwork costs. Buddy of mine done that to and impala and other cars left (for a long time) at the body shop he works at.

I wouldn't recommend making a habit of messing with any vehicles that don't belong to you until you already know something on em. ::)

TylerCharger69

That vehicle also may have been used in some sort of crime spree....Talk to the authorities about it first.   What'll probably happen,  at least here in Texas, is that they will impound it.  If no one claims it,  they will auction it off at the local police auction.   Good thing about that is....they give you the necessary paperwork to get it titled!!!   Otherwise  prepare to spend loads on filing fees,  bonded title fees,  or abandoned vehicle fees....etc.etc.etc.    Not to mention the tags.

Silver R/T

maybe some gangsta' was supposed to pick it up with a few kilo's of powder in the back. Now they're watching you and they'll want those kilo's back :)

Not to bust your chops on this but what you did was highly illegal. This would be known as auto tampering here in Boone county. I as a member of law enforcement would not advise you to do what you did. Your best bet would be to contact your local law enforcement agency and report it. They will most likely tag truck and have it towed since it is in a public place. If it had been on a private lot you could have contacted owner of lot and he could have it towed. Either way tow company would have the right after so many days to get a title and sell truck. They would have to try to contact owner during the waiting period to fullfill legal obligation.

TylerCharger69

I definately agree.  Another way of looking at it is....IF...this truck was used in some sort of crime, well...now YOUR fingerprints are on it.  I'ts always best to get law enforcement involved and let the process take it's course.  Since this IS in a public place,  I'm surprised it hasn't been towed off already.

I have contacted the police, they don't think I did anything wrong, I was keeping potential vandels out of it. the truck is an 87 dodge ramcharger, and I looked in the back, there is no dead body in there. I am getting it declared abandoned and paying the DMV $15 for the new title. So I get a really good vehicle for $15. I'll try to post pics because I have never seen a less rusty vehicle in michigan that wasn't brand new. this stupid thing has no rust! and up here that is unheard of. any way thanks for the ideas. Some of you need to stop freaking out about getting arrested, but I guess that is going to keep you out of jail, just try to relax more guys.

sounds like someone has been smokin some crack??? ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

TylerCharger69

lol...no...the DMV  wil not just hand you a title to a car....the abandonment process takes a while in case someone comes to claim the car,  or like someone has suggested...maybe it's a future repo, and the guy just left it there to be picked up....Investigations need to take place in order to find previous ownership,  etc. etc. etc.     Well...I need to go now....I saw a '69  440+6 Charger on the side of the road, and I need to go pay $15.00 for an abandoned title before someone beats me to it!!!   C'mon now.......do some research!!!  I too will have to carry a flag for the cause  :icon_bs:

moparguy01

:icon_bs: :icon_bs: :icon_bs: there is no way you got a abandoned title that easy. Not in ANY state. if thats the case i know where there are a few dozen abandoned vehicles that are quite desirable. including a superbird and a aar cuda sitting outside for years that the owner refuses to sell. well they're been sitting there so i guess theyre abandoned. better go pick them up.

I can smell the BS from miles away. sorry kid.

ahh guys, it is sitting in a public parking lot for 2 months now, the police have sent notices to the owner, and are now asking me to wait 48 hours before they will give me the required police report. I don't know what that link was all about, but I was face to face with a secretary of state employe and she layed it all out for me. I am not going to private property and taking cars, I havn't taken this car, I took the keys out of the ignition, checked the vehicle for any insurace cards and such, locked it looked it over good to make sure I even wanted to pursue the truck, and left it as I found it, only locked. Now, when I called the County Sherrif dept, and talked to a deputy, he told me that what I did wasn't wrong. In fact, I left my name, address, phone #, birth day, and told them to call me. they have, I've met with them, and no one in a uniform has even tried to accuse me of any wrong doing. SO CALM THE FRICK DOWN car lovers, I am not taking your baby, I am trying to take an abandoned truck that I can use that some one left for dead. IF that is not the case and it is stolen, it is going back to the owner, minus any vandalism. so once again CALM THE CRAP DOWN!!! I will try to post an update saturday some time. I will even try to scan the paper work onto here so you can check it out.

I think this did get blown out of context. My plans are to get it, get it drivable, and then try and learn how to paint a little, and make this my test vehicle to give me some experiance so that I don't screw up my Charger. And it would be nice to take to the dunes a few times as well. Thanks for all the attempted guilt trips, my mom would be proud. I still have two 340's for sale, and those I have recipts for.

its definately a GM product. look at the trunk latch. its too big too be a camaro. i spent alot of time in the truck of a 68 camaro wiring up the door poppers. i barely fit.
