440 TIMING

ANYONE KNOW THE CORRCET  TIMING FOR A  70  440  4BBL  FROM A 70 IMPERIAL?  ALSO CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG, BUT THE CORRECT WAY TO DO THIS IS WITH THE VACUUM ADVANCE HOSE OFF AND PLUGGED, ENGINE RUNNING AT IDLE  AND THE SET THE TIMING. THANKS

Yes, the vacuum advance needs to be plugged off when setting the base timing.  I would start at 10*BTDC at idle and see how it runs. This is assuming the engine is bone stock, of course.

IT IS STOCK, IT SEEMS TO RUN OK ,BUT HAS  THAT "HARD CRANK" WHEN YOU START IT IF ITS WARMED UP, LIKE THE TIMING IS OFF A BIT. I ASSUMED THAT THE CLOSER TO TDC THE TIMING ,THE EASIER IT WOULD BE TO START. THANKS

I have sometimes noticed on my 440 in my truck that it sometimes has that hard start when warm when the timing is retarded a little bit.

If its kicking back or jerks while cranking, its too advanced, you may want to check the retard solenoid on the dizzy, i'm sure the 70 440 came with it if its original, its on the vacuum advance pod, it grounds itself to the throttle when you let off & retards the timing 4 or 6* for easier starts & prevents desieling.
