Hi Guys,  trying to get a old clunker going and deciding which 727 to use. I have four , the earlest is a 68 model and the latest is a 76 model,   Which ones are better..............John

MOPARHOUND!

Member John Kunkel would probably be best at answering this question, but I'll give a little input.

Chrysler improved theĀ  727 on an ongoing basis as each year passed.

Any '71 and up tranny would be a good choice, with the 76-78 model years being the best choice, as they had some gear "pitches" (angles?) changed for added strength.

Be careful with the 78 models, some of them had "lock-up converters", and cause some converter interchange problems.

*Speed costs money son, how fast do you want to go, and for how long?"
*"Build the biggest engine you can afford the first time."
*"We normally wouldn't use a 383 for this build, parts and labor for a 440 cost the same."

Some of the upgrades in later models are for comfort and some for durability. The '76 will have the stronger output shaft spline and rear clutch spring but will most likely have a controlled load front servo. That's why I like to have a variety of years' parts available and chose the best parts for the build.

If you're going to performance build a 727 there are no really bad ones. A good reprogramming kit like the TransGo TF-2 will address most of the weaknesses in all years.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks Guys, just the input I was looking for............J

Chryco Psycho

the valve body after I think 68 added part throttle kickdown , there are a lot of upgrades available for the 727 as well , there is a lower 1 st gear 2.77 instaed of 2.45 , & better sprags as well as using drums with more clutches 3-4 or 5  & heavier planetaries with 4 pinions over the lighter 3 pinion design , etc
