Why are you selling the engine you were going to put in your car?  Did you find something else or are you passing on that project?

I'm trying to do other "big things" right now and need to raise some cash. Also, the last time my buddy and I worked on the car (trying to get the 318 that's in the car to run), we had an electrical fire and a couple of the harnesses got fried. The way I see it, it's gonna be a while before I get those electrical issues sorted out, so rather than keep the engine sitting there for who knows how much longer, I'd rather sell it, get some cash, and take care of more "urgent" things.

The car ain't going nowhere though (literally and figuratively).

Hey Ponch,

I heard a news story today about a rash of thefts in L.A. that led me to thinking about something.  :shruggy:

http://articles.latimes.com/2011/dec/12/local/la-me-tuba-thefts-20111212

A rash of tuba thefts at Southland high schools
The thefts, band leaders say, are probably attributable to Southern California's banda music craze and to the high prices the brass instruments fetch on the black market.

December 12, 2011
By Sam Quinones, Los Angeles Times

As Southern California awoke to the wreckage from a recent massive windstorm, music teacher Ruben Gonzalez Jr. was assessing a different sort of devastation in his band room at South Gate High School.

Thieves had pried open a door and torn the room apart while hunting for a specific instrument. "All they took were tubas," Gonzalez said. Losses included an upright concert tuba and a silver sousaphone — or marching-band tuba — worth a combined $13,000.

----------------------------------

I'm looking to offset the cost of my daughter's college tuition in the future & thought I'd hire some of the crackheads in the nearby city to swipe some tubas, then resell them for a profit. My question is, if the banda music craze is true, do you think there is a market here in the north east for hot tubas, or is it just a southern CA thing?

Seeing that, as one guy here so eloquently put it - my "race is invading this country" - it would be a worthwhile endeavour. Let me ask you this - how many years before your daughter goes to college? If it's a few years, it could be a long term investment. The way we're going, Mexicans are pretty much going to take over the entire country pretty soon, so even if there isn't currently a market for it, there will be one in the future and you could sell them at a premium.

Also keep in mind that Mexican "banda" music is a descendant of Polka and German "beer hall" music (believe it or not, there were a ton of German and Polish immigrants in Mexico). I suspect that there is a sizeable German and/or Polish population in your part of the country, so you could try to sling them to that crowd. Whether you could get top dollar for them as you would with a Mexican banda, however,  is questionable.

I hadn't noticed this feature before.  And being a lazy gringo, I don't feel like reading all of the posts to see how accurate Ponch really is.  So I thought I'd ask a test question instead.

Why does Phoenix, AZ have so many Mexicans while Mesa, AZ has so many Mormons?

I know the correct answer. Does Ponch? Lets find out!

Why do Mexicans prefer GM vehicles?

It's not necessarily just GM vehicles, but the Big Three. It's because in the 1960's Mexico passed a law that said that any vehicles sold in the country had to be at least assembled in Mexico. Most manufacturers pulled out (BMW, Mercedez, etc) but the Big Three, AMC (or as it's Mexican subsidiary was known VAM), and a couple of foreign ones (Datsun, VW, Renault) stayed. So Mexicans didn't really have a lot of choices if, for example, you needed a pick up truck with a back window big enough to put a huge chrome sticker of your hometown on. Those laws were repealed/modified in the mid 90's so now you can buy just about any make that we have here - and even some that we don't, like Peugeot, but the loyalty gained by those manufacturers who stayed still remains strong.

Because we want to make the most of any available space that we have. Just like 15 mexicans can live in a 1 bedroom apartment, they can also squeeze 5 cars in a two car driveway/front lawn. It also generates saving in lawn care AND keeps the cars away from other Mexicans.

I never did get my answer for this....
