i was looking in my book for head bolt specs and one book says 50lbs and int the back it says 95lbs. in 3 other books it just says 95lbs, should i tighten them to that? the motor is a 77 318.

Following the proper sequence torque the bolts to 50 ft/lbs.  Then repeat the process  at 95 ft/lbs

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.

I agree , I generally torque them 3 times 65-85-95 with oil on the threads

that's good info to know.  Always use new bolts right?

CP, is the oil so they come out easy later on??  That's probably a dumb question, but I was just curious.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Mike, Those aren't stupid questions at all...

The factory bolts can be reused....no problem there.  :yesnod:

The oil is needed to make sure that the proper TQ value is applied to the fastner. Putting them in dry will leave you on the low side of what you're shooting for.

The idea is to eliminate as much friction as possible from the threads. The oil also protects the threads on the headbolt & block.

For the record....Factory bolts can be reused....UNLESS   you have aluminum heads......in which case  the bolts need to be replaced each time the head is removed.   But as far as cast heads?....use the old ones!!!

It's the old saying, use Oil for torque'ing "on threads and under heads"
