The mystery of GREEN

Ok, so maybe I'm the only one that doesn't get it.

I have the 68 Charger Illustrated Facts and Features Manual. With regard to Green Vinyl Tops it clearly states this verbatim:

"The attractive vinyl roof is available on both Charger R/T and Charger as an extra cost option. The black or white vinyl roofs will go with all exterior colors. If the new green vinyl roof is desired, it is available with green trim, green or gold exterior, or when black or white with black interior trim is used with a black or white exterior."

Besides the last sentence being a huge run on, what does that mean and is it truth?

Here is how I intrepret it specifically for GREEN Vinyl Tops:

If green roof, then the interior can ONLY be Green and you can only have a green or gold exterior.

Is this correct? Am I reading this correctly and/or is this mis information? Which begs the question if anyone has a 68 Charger from the factory that has a green roof and didn't come with either a gold or green exterior paint job?

Baffled and thanks,

Needa68

i think i am right in saying  that  Chrysler would of  built any  charger  or any mopar for that matter , in any non recommended color combination , if a customer sat down with the dealer's salesman &  check off the appropriate option boxes .
Feel free to post any relevant picture you think we all might like to see in the threads below!

A little background first. The vinyl tops in 68 were only available in black, white or green. White interiors weren't all white - they were white and black since the dash, carpet, and package tray were black. There were 2 different shades of gold and 4 different shades of green paint. So what the paragraph seems to be saying is that a green vinyl top was available on green or gold cars with green trim (interior?). You could also get a green top on black or white painted cars as long as you got a black or white (and black) interior. I have seen at least one white car with a green vinyl top but I don't remember the interior color (although I thought it was green). I'm sure Dodge had a brochure that showed which interior colors were recommended with which paint colors but I don't have one for 68. Of course, you could order anything you wanted so I'm positive there's some wild ones out there.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Troy,

You seem to be my man on this topic. Thanks for responding.

So would you say that white cars with green tops and green interiors are rare and pretty much break the mould? If so, do you have any degree of rareity?

Your reply, "You could also get a green top on black or white painted cars as long as you got a black or white (and black) interior. I have seen at least one white car with a green vinyl top but I don't remember the interior color (although I thought it was green). ", is of great interest.

Here's why. If the standard was to order a green top on a green or gold car as long as you got the black or white interior, then a green top, green interior, white exterior car would be really out of sync!

Whats more, is that if a car were to conform to a green top, green interior and white exterior package, wouldn't it have to have been "pre-ordered" buy a customer as such? Surely the factory wouldn't have produced a green top, green interior and white exterior car as a non pre ordered sales bank car that they just distributed to the dealership.

Also, I am curious to hear what you might think the R/T stripe color would be on a green top, green interior, white exterior car? Also, where and when did you see the green top, green interior (maybe) white exterior car you mentioned? Can you remember if it was an R/T model?

Thanks so much for your analysis.

Robert

robert in reading your posts over,..

i want to share with you the fact that Mr. J.D. Jones who lived down the street till his death ten years ago, owned at that time he moved in, a 1968 383 triple green Charger which he soon sold for a 1968 tripple green Newport.  :shruggy:
I dont remember if the charger was a HP 383 but i do seem to remember it had the buddy seat with a three on the tree and a/c... I distincly remember the AirTemp decals in the green tinted rear side windows...  :yesnod:
I loved chargers and that one was the first i ever got to actually climb around and into,.. I was 11 at that time and his son and i became great friends...

I'll never forget J.D. (a most excellent guy) those cars or the story he told me, that, because he lived in an apt. at the foot of Fell St. here in san francisco which was directly at the exit of a freeway (now torn down due to the '89 Loma Preata earthquake) - which had a very quick light, he needed a car that could back out of the driveway and scoot up the very steep hill ahead of the heavy traffic.
it was the mint green with dark green inserts in the seats... i'll try to find a pic of that green...

and... I guess i missed your posts when ya made them, but will look for them now...  :icon_smile_wink:

It isn't a comment on rarity but there was a white 68 here in town with green interior and green top.   A friend of mine used to own it and he stripped the vinyl and interior and made black in/black out car.  There was another one in town at one time with the same white/green/green but it was a 69.
