I have a 1968 Charger project and have been debating on keeping it some what original with putting in a 440.  On the other hand the 6.1 Hemi would be a great engine because of the fuel injection and the potential it has as well.  What should be done?  Anyone have an opinion on either motor and which is the better one to go with for reliability and fun factor.

Ghoste

I think that for the moment, the 440 is the cheaper and easier way to go but the aftermarket support for the new engine is coming on strong.   The new tech stuff is becoming a really popular swap so it may be fun to be on the front of the trend if you are up to the challenges.
It's almost a flip a coin decision in a lot of ways.

68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

personally or my :Twocents:  that 440 will gain alot more attention and respect  than any new 6.1 hemi in ANY vehicle

id say if you gonna spend big bucks to put in a 6.1 liter hemi than why not build a mild stroker with that 440 and have an EASY 550 + hp/tq    plus old school engines sound entirely better and it will bolt right in there with everything

Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

Fuel injected muscle car, nah,          440

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

I love this site but I feel this is a very old school site. I thinking of the 6.1 in my 68. New tec in old school car is there anything better?

What would it take to change the 440 over to fuel injection?  it would be a way to keep it old school but update it a little.

the new 6.1 hemi has what they call electronic lifters from what i hear so that the engine can run on 4 cylinders when cruising for highways   just think how much it would cost to replace those lifters when they  go bad.    things like that  are ok when the engine is brand new and build by dodge but no one knows how long those will last but theres got to be a heck of a price for those  :Twocents: :Twocents:

The lifter are not electronic, they are 2 piece bodies that are locked together with oil pressure.  The oil pressure is controlled by solenoids.  I agree they are probably are $, but it is neat technology.  I drove one and you can't even feel the engine switch from 8 cyl to 4 cyl to 8 cyl.  New 5.7 Hemis pulling mid 20mpg.  I wish my 440's could do that.

you don't buy a muscle car for it's gas economy!!!! or concern of it!?!?!?!? LOL oh did i say that out loud!?!?!?! hahahaha

the 6.1 does not come with mds lifters. they are a 5.7 piece. in fact, the 5.7 responds to cam swaps pretty well if you can get around the stock computer. only problem in would see with a 6.1 swap into the car is the fact that if you can find a complete 6.1, you will pay dearly for it. would be much eiser and alot less stressfull right now to build the 440.

lifters for these motors are not very expensive either. the 5.7 cars i work on sometimes get the mds lifter swapped out, can be done with gaskets and all for about 250-300 bucks.

sorry to have mistaken about the electonic lifters that was somthing that i heard  if you look closely how i stated that    :icon_smile_sad:

thats kewl. the srt8 chargers and 300's have the gas guzzler tax also.
its a easy mod to get rid of on the 5.7 cars tho and mileage is not affected that much if at all. most have seen only 1-2 mpg loss max. some have seen 0 loss in the mpg.
