I remember seeing (and hearing) this car at the Garlits show. If I remember right, they were asking $350k or something along those lines. When I read this ad I'm a bit puzzled...
QuoteThis might be the finest example of a 1968 Hurst Super Stock Hemi Dart factory Mopar racecar. It is 1 of 53 LO23 cars documented by Galen Govier. "Mr. Norm" of Grand Spaulding Dodge fame, said that it is the nicest one that he has ever seen. In the judging at the recent 19th Annual Mopars with Big Daddy at the "Garlits' Museum of Drag Racing", this car beat the car that won the Mopar Nationals. "Mr. Norm" and "Big Daddy" Don Garlits have autographed the inside of the trunk lid. Unlike most, this car is not tubbed or roll-caged, but rebodied to perfection and painted to a mirror finish.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

I guess it depends on what your definition of is, is. Or 'rebody' in this case. I'm not sure how widespread that word 'rebody' is in this hobby yet. I haven't heard it used much, if at all, outside of this site so it may be a synonym of the word 'restore' to some people because I doubt anyone would use that word as we have defined it in a for sale ad which features a $350k car.

BTW, $350k is a crapload of money for that car. I know this one is very rare and special and all that but I guess I'm not a big Dart fan. I'd take a 2nd gen Charger any day over one of those. I'd sure sell it for that much though.

Ghoste

Or maybe it's an overpriced clone with fraudulently replaced tags?

adauto

I thought the factory cars were tubbed,, ect? Grandads Dart turned hotrod?

Nope, no tubs.  Some crude altering of the wheel well opening at the rear when they were at Hurst but no tubs.

hemigeno

The fact that it has an "NOS Hemi radiator cap" sealed it for me --  Where's my checkbook...   :P

Shakey

I thought the dog dish caps in '68 were different than the ones on that car?

Sounds to me like they had a fender tag and alot of parts from a factory Hemi Dart and then went out and
found themselves a 68 Dart to put it all on!
Any who knows maybe some of those "hemi" parts came from other hemi cars and not the one on the VIN.

That would significantly decrease the value of the car in my mind.... :rotz:

The questioned history of one certain Hemi Dart at B-J brought big money like this one a couple auctions ago.  Galen wouldn't certify it, not that it means anything.

charge-it

I was at Garlits and saw it. The guy started it up several times. I took lots of pics of it but didn`t get the vin from it. The price on the windshield was 375K. I never gave it a thought that it make be a fake. 375K is a joke if that`s the case. A friend of mine has a real one and it has a replacement HEMI. I know he paid about 250K about a year or so ago. His is one of the cars that was never cut up. I have pics of that car as well. It`s a real LO23.

I think the mural on the door of the girl with three legs is worth the asking price alone.  :icon_smile_big:
Watch me turn beer into pee for $5.

twilt

The sellers understanding of the term "rebodied" might be different than what most people think.

Ghoste

It might be.  But he seems to know enough about cars to want all the money for this one.  I suppose it's easy to sit back and be an internet car critic, but real or rebody, whoever buys it will hopefully not be so naive as to not verify the car absolutely before buying.

If I'm not mistaken, there was a very informative article in MCG about this car.
The original car was wiped in a street race as I recall. Then all salvagable parts were transferred onto a "donor" vehicle.
By all rights, all of the "special" Hemi-Dart components were re-utilized, so I guess you can call it "authentic"....but the biggest component - the body shell - was replaced.

Ghoste

Or based on an authentic?  :-\

As for the dog dish caps, technically since the 68 Super Stock cars were shipped with no hub caps it wouldn't matter what cap he put on there they would be wrong.
I don't know if those caps are wrong for other 68 Darts though.
