Ebay's attempting to control scammers, finally.

I haven't been on eGouge lately, so I was a little perplexed when I followed a link there today. All bidders are just "Bidder #?" now.
We can't check out other bidder's past purchases anymore, it seems...what fun is that??
It doesn't look like we can even see how many actual purchases they've made, either. Maybe they're still working out kinks?

The thing that somewhat puzzles me, is how did the scammers actually accomplish anything with their eBay tactics?  Are there that many complete morons who think that they can purchase a numbers-matching Hemi Cuda Convertible for $10k as long as they wire the money to Nigeria first?

I agree. I think it's the dumbest thing they have allowed since the Private Bidder thing. I know they are trying to prevent scammers from sending people second chance offers, but I don't like it. I get sent fake stuff all the time from what appears to be eBay. I just delete and move on.

Maybe eBay should spend some of the Gagillions they make on better security for the consumer.

I dont like the new system either. I think it would have been simpler and smarter for ebay to get rid of their 2nd chance offer system.

I don't care for this new "bidder#" designation either, but I have to give eBay credit for catching 2 different guys who somehow have hijacked our eBay account and listed items, and billed them to our account.  The first time it happened was about 7 months ago, when a guy listed a bunch of camera equipment under our name, but used an email address for a contact.  That listing charged our account over $65.   We got that one straightened out and eBay credited our account for the money we were charged.  We changed our password, while straightening out the mess.  Last week someone else hijacked our account and listed a Mustang under our name.  EBay wouldn't give us access to our account until we changed our password again.  Once we did that, they refunded the $55 that had been charged to our account.  I don't know how these crooks manage to hijack other people's accounts, but I'm glad that eBay monitors the listings and looks for ones that appear unusual.

Never give your password out to an email that looks legit from ebay.  They preach it over and over to not do it and people still fall for it.    Not all webpage designers are legit.

Same with paypal.     Do not click on any links from any paypal email.     Go  open your browser and log in paypal the old fashioned way.

Thats right. I get fake e-mails all the time from "Paypal" telling me someone has charged $200 or $300 to my Paypal account. And if I dispute it click on the link they provide. What a scam.

I dont get it either, if they actually want to prevent scam artists from selling someone else's car they should make everyone who's selling a car on ebay post correct Title for that car also

As ebay changes trying to eliminate the garbage so is the scammers.  There was a couple auctions recently with scantily clad women involved.  When you clicked on it, it would send you to a very convincing looking authentic ebay page asking you to agree you were old enuf to view the auction.  The kicker:  they wanted your username and password to verify your age.

ebay should also get rid of pre approved auctions. there almost always a scam . Rene

I like the one where you click on the Charger...and you're not on e-bay anymore, you've been redirected to a site that's not ebay.
