I have a 70 charger with a 318 automatic on the column.  When I try to put the car in drive or reverse the car wont move.  The steering column feels loose.  I checked the linkage at the transmission and it shifts when I move it, so is it a problem at the column and is it a easy fix?

Am I right in thinking you mean the shifter going through the column is lose?? If yes, it is a problem, but probably not keeping you from shifting into ANY gear.      Make sure you have fluid on the stick.

I would first jack up the rear of the car and set it on a pair of KNOWN very good stands. This should keep you from being run over by your own car and should keep you from putting it through a wall..

Then go under the car and see if you can move the shift lever by hand. If your shifter is in park you should NOT be able to move it.  If you can move it your linkage will need some rebuilding.

Depending on what you find right or wrong with the linkage, I would move on to starting the car, holding the brake and putting it in gear. As you release the brake the wheels should turn. If not, shut it off, leaving it in gear, and go underneath the car again to look at the shift lever position. If it has moved to another position then you have more to look at. You can try starting it again and pulling the shifter down to 1st. The linkage would have to be broke or missing to not find a gear going all the way down to 1st.

Let us know..

I was under the car and I was able to move the shifter by hand.  I'll put it up on jack stands tommorow.  I changed the neutral safety switch if I didn't tighten it all the way would that make a difference?

No, I believe the neutral safety switch allows the car to start in neutral or park only. It would not keep the trans from shifting or driving the wheels. I had a car do that once. It was just like I put it in neutral in any gear while it was running. The front pump was bad. Had entire tranny rebuilt.
If it ain't wide open; it ain't running.        Rule number one in motocross racing: Pin it; row the gear box; and wait until you hit something.     At work my motto is: If you need me, call someone else.

Thats what I'm feeling.  It feels like im in neutral on all gears
