The photo of the tail panal show a different color between taillights?  Is it supposed to be FLAT BLACK???

Should be Organosol, which is a rough textured black AFAIK.

It is a 383-2bbl column auto, PS, AM radio. Think we are going to just do the interior and vynil top and keep the original paint for now. Don't need to get into another resto that seems to never get done. I like looking/driving cars with original paint anyway, you don't have to worry about Dings/dents and scratches. The photo of the tail panal show a different color between taillights?  Is it supposed to be FLAT BLACK???

I agree it's a lot more fun to have the car on the road than to have it sitting for 3 or 4 years for a resto. Nice charger  :2thumbs:

My son wants to  put a Black top and black interior or Black with Red butt stripe and interior...It is original Black with White top and GREEN interior....odd.

I would walk wheel right past a row of red, blue & black rides' to check out that car if it was brought back to original color combo.

Like both my cars, all black Chargers are a dime a dozen.   :Twocents: It would be original & unique restored the way it came from the factory.

Well, I know what you're saying but the only time I typically see any 2nd gen Chargers is at Mopar-only car shows so I don't know if "dime-a-dozen" really applies. I'm happy just to see one.

Curtis, I just think the color combo is over done with Chargers' and if you would have painted your car the factory shade my money says you'd agree with me.  Maybe if you went to more shows than what Oregon has to offer.

If you notice I said "Like my cars".  It's a rare occasion to see a black or red car that came that way from the factory.   :Twocents:
The minute I typed "dime a dozen" I knew you would be the one to say some thing before the night was over.

My opinion, I don't like some of yours either.    ;)

It's the other way around. That is, if I agreed with you I would have painted it green. ;) Certain things are popular for a reason, mainly because a lot of people like them. But then if I really wanted to run with the crowd I would have purchased a Camaro or Rustang. By that measure I don't consider a black Charger to be running with the crowd. In the end we all get to do what we want with the cars we own.

I always thought 68 Chargers used a coat of black unbuffed lacquer  paint on the tail panel, 69 and later used the organosol ???

Great find XS29J!

I'd switch out the original interior to black or white. I'd probably go with the white!

I think people will see the green interior and just guess that you painted your green car black.

Good luck with both cars.

Got me thinking there, so I dug out the Engineering Illustration for 1968 tailpanel treatments.  That graphic shows Organosol inside the trim boundary - except for the St. Louis plant which used a low gloss enamel instead.  Similar to what they did in '69.

Agreed. I'm guessing that it would not be a problem to post a partial photo of the engineering illustrations in question. If it's protected then please delete.

Thanks for posting that, Dan.  That's exactly what I found too.

I don't think such documents are overly protected by Chrysler when isolated things pop up like this, but I heard from Barry Washington (DC.com member Alaskan T/A and also the guru behind Hamtramck-Historical.com) a year or so ago that Chrysler still considers the Engineering Illustrations like that to be their copyrighted information.  His website had uploaded a TON of great info just like that and was asked to take it down by Chrysler's barrister department.

If you took the pic or made the scan, I certainly have no problem with it being posted although that's still Troy's ultimate decision.  If it's watermarked and swiped from another website (I'm guilty of that too, so not trying to preach here), it's better to get permission and cite the source when posting - even if the watermark has been carved out.

Thanks again for posting it - I didn't have the time/opportunity to do so myself.

:2thumbs:

Boy, we're really getting off topic here!!!   :P

Yep, I swiped it from Barry's site a long time ago for my own edification.  ;)  Barry is a good man. And it will be nice once all the Engineering Drawings get into print.

And going off topic is sometimes how most of the educating gets done.  :icon_smile_cool:

Alaskan_TA

Well, thanks for the mention guys, but I did not have any '68 Charger drawings.

Chrysler sold the reproduction rights to all the drawings, that is why they asked me to pull them from HH. They did not come right out & tell me that at the time, but it would have been nice to know.

In essence, they did not want to have the folks with the reproduction rights competing with a "free" source.

I would have sweared on a Bible you did, Barry.  :scratchchin:  Hmm, I will have to think hard on where I got the image then. And you don't get mentioned enough in my mind. Thank you for all the good work!

Thanks for the great info Geno and Dan, can't argue with documentation like this! I must have had all St Louis cars thru the years as they all were a very thin layer of flat paint on the tails. The organasol that Rich Costello in St Louis sprayed on my Charger is way to textured compared to the original 68 Chargers I have owned thru the years. Anytime I touched up the tail panel, we always used lacquer but this was in the early and mid 70's...............of course we all thought acrylic enamel or lacquer was the bees knees back then heh heh

Steve (also sorry for the hi-jack) :2thumbs:

The source of your image may not want "credit"... I have it too in my archives, but it was provided to me with an understanding it was for my own documentation.  If/when the documents are reproduced, I will gladly buy a legit copy...
