I have a friend with a 70 charger 500 that is being put together. Does anyone know how to decifer the numbers to tell the year of the trans?. It has nuber 26811508 on machined surface on pass side bellhousing. Any help will be appreciated. thanks.

Is there a 4 digit number stamped on there?

Look at this website.  May have the information you are seeking.

The second character is probably a "G" which would make it 2G811508. The 8 following the G is probably a 3. This would be the partial VIN of a '72 car built at the Saint Louis plant.

Look on the drivers side of the case just above the pan gasket for the stamped part number which will indicate its origin.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Brad

Thanks for the assistance, I will double check the numbers to be sure.

there is a way to know the exact day of manufacture...    as Chrysler used a 10,000 day calander....     you simple need to match the corosponding day to the number...     its a real pain in the ass...    I have the dates on an Excel spreadsheet...     let me search for it...
1968 Dodge Charger - 6.1L Hemi / 6-speed / 3.55 Sure Grip

2013 Dodge Challenger R/T - 5.7L Hemi / 6-speed / 3.73 Limited Slip

1964 Dodge Polara 500 - 440 / 4-speed / 3.91 Sure Grip

1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye - 340 / A-518 / 3.23 Sure Grip

I finally went to my friends house and pulled the numbers off of the pan rail. They are PK3515868 3975 5073. Does anyone have the year of this transmission?

Ghoste

It came out of a 1972 C body with a 440 and it was built on June 15th of 72.

Brad

Thanks a ton Ghoste, I really appreciate it. Now we will rebuild it and hopefully have the drivetrain in in a couple of more weeks.
