The transmission in my 72 Charger is now leaking in two places, has approx. 165k miles on it. I bought a 72 Charger parts car with the same tranny, has only 72k miles. Problem is I'm not sure when the last time that car was driven. Plates are from 1987, guy I bought it from said it was last driven 10 to 15 years ago.
Am I asking for trouble if I swap the tranny's? Should I bring it to a transmission shop and have them go through it first? What problems could arise from letting a tranny sit that long?

In the mid eighties I swapped the 904 tranny in my 72 charger with one from a 72 Charger in the local junkyard. this car was badly wrecked and had been there for a long time... almost since it was new I was told...a freind of mine had bought the 318 out of it years earlier for his van...I'd say the car sat for at least 10 years before I took the tranny out, probably more...change the fluid and filter, and the front seal and you should be fine....

The rubber components in the transmission deteriorate with age, a trans that has been sitting for 10-15 years is iffy; I wouldn't go to the trouble of swapping it in without freshening it up.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

For the amount of money to have it done I sure agree with John.  It's a lot easier and faster to go through it now than to put it in and have to take it back out again.

I pulled a tranny out of the salvage yard that had been sitting for many , many years. Pulled the pan and the fluid had gelled. I mean I had stings of gel globs hanging down.  Took a paint brush and brushed out all the gel globs I could get to, cleaned the pan , put in a new gasket, installed it , new fluid and am still driving it. That was twenty years ago. Do what ever gives YOU the best piece of mind. I would try it.........but pulling a tranny is not much trouble for me.......J

thanks for the replies guys.
If I wanted to freshen up the tranny, is that something I could do myself? Or should I leave it to the pros. The only tranny work I've ever done is change the oil and filter.
