if you have a reasonable media blaster nearby i would blast it being a bodyman i know that is what i would prefer so it would save you more cash , reason being is that it will be cleaner ,all the nooks and cranies will be done meaning alot les prep work
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

we use sand at the restoration shop i work at, as long as you know what your doing and have low enough air pressure and enough angle you wont warp the metal. But basically you just have to be careful. We havent had any problems while doing it.

I like it because it really finds any bad spots, it';ll blow a hole in the metal, then i know i gotta replace it.

how long do i have to other work on the body before i have to get primer on it? thanks tom

I don't know that you'll be saving much by doing it yourself in this dept. My body shop had their guy do it and it cost them about as much to have it blasted as it would have to have my guy do it, and I was able to avoid a lot of potential pitfalls such as worrying about it rusting between the blaster and the shop. Also, your body guy might not want it all blasted so I would definitely check with him before you decide his fate beforehand.

i prime parts and cars usually within 48 hours of sandblasting.

I've worked at many different body shops & seen it go from one extreme to another, From one shop that sez you cant touch the bare metal with no rubber gloves, Cant breath on it & cant sit overnight or moisture in air will rust it, Must get primed right now this second to other shops that will just kick it in a corner to sit in bare metal for many years to rust away again, Then even paint over the rust :icon_smile_angry: :flame: (hacks) Most shops seemed to do the latter which I totally disagree with. Be carefull where you take it or you'll probably get it sitting in bare metal forever. I know, I see it all the time unfortunately.  :rotz:LEON.

I used to own a Plastic Media Bussness. I have also worked on cars that have been sand blasted. I prefer Plastic. As far as how long it can sit. I had a hood that I had blasted to show people what it would do. It sat INSIDE my shop for over a year. The only place that it had any problems was where someone would touch it. That was just a surface rust and it came clean with metal etch. BUT I live in a very dry climate. On the sand blasted pieces the rust problem starts right away. With sandblasting it opens up the metal pores and alows the moisture to get into it faster and rust will show up faster. Alot depends on the amount of moisture in the air. Prim the parts/car as soon as possable. During the winter I like to prim the areas that I don't have to do any work on right away. The rust areas I leave bare so I can cut out and replace, as with the big dents. When themetal work is done then I seal those areas and then the whole car get primed with blocking primer. During the summer I do all the metal work first then do my sealing and priming.

after blasting you should prime within 8 hours, i sed to give a coat of zinc then a good 2pack primer, costs a little extra but its worth it..jim

Quoteafter blasting you should prime within 8 hours,

i stopped in the parking lot of the blasting guy , with some  spray cans of primer and did my fenders before i brought them home . even the moister from your hands will cause rust to begin . Rene

When Rene is offended, he's usually quick to give it right back.  It's in his sig.
I'm in a more humid climate and a buddy of mine had a 68 Shelby media blasted last year and then didn't prime it.  The car began rusting in short order and it cost him extra to get that taken care of.  More than priming it right away would have cost.  So, yes, its climate dependant but I wouldn't chance it sitting around too long if it were mine.
