Anybody use Limewire?

My pita daughter wants to subscribe to Limewire to download her own music. We had a problem with Kazaa a couple of years ago, it crashed my computer. Before we let her use Limewire, I'd like to know if anybody has any experience with it, good or bad. Thanks

TK73

My EX used it for a few weeks.  She downloaded a NASTY virus I could not get off the system.  I ended up reformatting and reloading EVERY F*in  program and file I had backed up, 8 hours worth of work.  NOT HAPPY and told her about it.  Said no more of that crap.

A week later she downloaded Limewire again did the same D@MN thing.  I had to spend another 8 F*IN hours reformatting, loading, etc...

Before a bunch of techie goobs tell me I should have protected my system better: I am a security paranoid individual and I had that system well protected from uninvited nasty stuff...

Better luck to ya than I had...

limewire tends to tie into Kazaa and grokster networks, when you run a spyware check on the system you'll find limewire as a risk.  I'm not comfortable letting the kids use it myself, my last p2p network software got banned/closed back in September.  My daughters pc almost choked to death on spyware and trojan horse viruses recently, took me several hours to get it all cleaned out.  The kids just don't think about risk when surfing.  (have a 15 year old and a 10 yr old).  Somehow her antivirus software got disabled.  I keep AV and firewall software active on mine, and after using it for a week or so, it had several high risk items, then after cleaning the system, and reinstalling limewire, it loaded a bunch of adware cookies which I don't care for.

Anyway, I have limewire installed on my pc as a means to test it out, and it does work pretty good, but as stated before if you had probs with Kazaa you'll probably encounter similar problems with limewire.  Overall, I wouldn't let it remain on the system for long, install, download what you want then uninstall it afterwards.

Never had one problem with Limewire, and I've had it on my compy since 2004.

Just make sure that you have a firewall installed and that you make sure to set the program's parameters on the conservative side.

Other than that,  you shouldn't have any problems.

I use Limewire, just as I have been for years. I know my way around computers fully, and it poses no threat. Limewire does not contain any adware or spyware hiders.

I'm a limewire PRO user and I've never had any problems!

There ARE viruses that you can accidently download, but no matter what one you use there will always be those risks. The easiest way to spot a virus is never download an EXE or ZIP files. If you do there are a couple things to remember, first download only those files which have the most users, preferably over 20, make sure the file size should be the right size, and scan the item the moment it's done downloading.

The file size thing is real easy to spot. You'll notice that there will be 50 hits of no matter what you search with all the same file size, something around 187.0kb and yet you could have typed in a song or even a movie! Those are the easiest to spot, just keep your eyes open.

SAME thing here!! I won't use Limewire again. After reformatting, reloading, etc, I went out & bought an external hard drive just in case something like that ever happened again. I also use all sorts of Norton, anti-spyware, etc etc & scan EVERYTHING.

I'm also a part-time musician so I need to get my music from somewhere. I just use iTunes now exclusively. $0.99 cents a pop, no worries, no hassle. My in-laws even gave me a $50 itunes gift card, which makes it even better.

Never used Limewire, but I do like Lime in a Corona or a Margarita.   :D

I keep hearing about sound quality issues with music downloads, so until I can make an actual comparison myself, I don't have much interest in it. I'm content with the old fashioned way of buying a CD or a record album. I loaded & saved some CD's into my computer at work, but they sound like crap when you play them back. Some of the sounds, even vocals, are missing. I don't know if that's some kind of built in copyright protection on the CD's, but if that's an example of how a computer stores music files, I am definitely not interested in on line music downloads.

OM When you download music off limewire there is a star rating to tell you how the quality of music is, 5 stars means CD quality down to 1 star.

No offense to anyone but if you get a virus off limewire then it's USER error, not limewire. Like I said before you just can't go in and start downloading any file you want. Make sure the file should be correct is the first thing. When you find the 187.0kb virus files you can then block the source/person who has those files by right clicking, then they will never come up again, even if you search a different song they might have. The people that usually ask me to fix their computers after using limewire have no idea about file sizes, viruses, or generally know how to use limewire. Once again, no offense meant to anyone.

When you say rip, do you mean just save into the computer, or make another CD copy? I have to try making a copy at work to see how it comes out, but the ones I saved in files on the drive are horrible & unlistenable. The same CD's I saved, sound fine if I just play them.

i used to love WinMx, but didn't it shut down about 2 years ago? I use shareaza nowadays. It's kinda tricky to use, but once you get the hang of it and figure out all its idiosyncracies, you're in download heaven.

Drache is right (never thought I'd say that)...if you're trying to download "Kashmir" and the file you choose is 187KB, then you're a dumbass and deserve all the viruses/spyware you get. A good quality file should be about 750KB to 1 MB per minute...so a legit Kashmir file would be 7.5 - 10 MB, since the song is about 10 minutes long. It's just common sense, people.

Old Moparz - If you ripped your CD's into your computer using Windows Media Player, odds are it did it in .wma format (which sounds like crap, IMHO). You need to mess around with the settings and either choose the highest bitrate quality (which = a huge file) or rip them into mp3 format. Unfortunately, only Windows Media Player 10 converts to mp3 - older versions wont.

iTunes for me too. I don't have the time to screw around worrying about protecting my system from viruses all the time. If you operate above board using legitimate resources like you're supposed to it's not an issue.
