gas gauge needle vanished

well when i got my car teh gas gauge worked great, then a few weeks go by and it worked when i started the car then just started floating around, then it just stopped working, THEN i ran out of gas and when i got gas in the car and started it the damn needle had vanished! im assuming somehow its just pointing straight up now. i tried disconnecting and reconnecting the wire fromt he gas tank with no luck, is this most likely a problem with the gauge and will require a new one?

Sounds like you need a gauge.  Even if the sending unit wasn't working you should still see the needle.
