First of all I love video games.  Been playing since "Pong" came out in the 70's.  I have owned just about every system since then and love the PS2.  But $600.00 is way too much for me.  Not being a hater by all means, just too much green for me to stomach.  I personally am going to buy the Nintendo WII since it's so much cheaper.  Hey, the Gamecube was a real shocker and an excellent system so the $250.00 is a bargain!!

well I did some scouting last night to see if it was reasonable to get one.  At the time I didn't know there was going to be that much of a shortage of units. I talked to all the stores a week before and they all said that they would sell when they open up in the morning. I didnt find out until  2pm on thur. that they were going to sell them at 12:01 am Fri.
There were people camping out at some stores since Tues.  Usually every launch has about 18-30 systems per store. So I looked at the lines to see how many people were there. most places had about 40 ppl in line so I went inside (Walmart) to ask about when they would re-stock.  They told me that they were getting 10  PS3's  but actually got 6 ? so in other words they really only got 6 or some employee was hoarding a few of them. The next shipment comes in  about three weeks from now and that they wont gett any more until next year.   
I think that would be BS . Why would Sony not put out a good amount of systems for the X-mas Season where they could make boat loads of money ??

and no im not a loser with a bunch of money to spend I just saved all my change when I knew the PS3 was coming out

Sony has been having trouble with production on the PS3, some technical issues I guess, so they haven't been able to keep up with demand. I'd like to get one to help pay for a paint job on the Charger. Buying one for $600 is nothing if you can turn around and sell it for $5k.

Most people Sony was creating this shortage as a reason, and that many of the PS3 auctions on ebay will secretly be Sony selling their systems for the huge costs.

Sony on the other had a press release stating that they were having problems with the lasers for the blueray and that's what caused the shortage.

Nintendo Wii will have release 4 million systems by the end of 2006.... The cheapest game system available at half the price of a PS3....

I got a PS2 with about 3 hours play time on it  and an XBOX with about 3 hours playtime on it. Havent played a game on either one in almost 11 months. I think I will pass on the PS3.

I want one...but I'm a casual gamer and I'm not obsessed with being one of the first to have it and all that nonsense. Like someone said, I probably won't get one for another year or two. I didn't get a PS1 until it had been out for 3 years, and I waited until 2003 (almost 2 1/2 years) to get a PS2. Besides, everyone knows that the first run of units will have a bunch of bugs and other stuff that they'll have to fix.

BTW - Did y'all hear about 'man of the people' and notorious WalMart hater Sen. John Edwards sending a staffer over to WalMart (!) and drop his name to be at the front of the line so the good Senators kids could get a PS3?

I wouldnt mind having one but $600 is abit much for me to shell out for a game system. If I was to buy one I would probably sell it, cause I could use the money a hell of alot more than the PS3 anyways. I think I might try to get a Wii when it comes out though. I have heard some good things about it and at a price of around $300 you cant beat it.

A friend of mine's girlfriend works at the local Best Buy. She said they only had 26 units for sale. They were kind enough to tell those in line that if you were #27 or higher you might as well go home.

$600 killed the deal for me. I won't buy one until the go down to $25 at the used store. Of course, by that time they'll be all dead. But my Gamecube will keep going and going and going....

Of course, it doesn't help it that there are exactly one game in the PS3's lineup that I want... and it's avaliable on all three systems.

I just looked at 6 or 7 pages worth of PS3s there and only about 5 are getting any bids, and those were down in the $3k range. That one I linked above was going for over $7,100k last night but today I see it ended at $2,276. How can the price drop almost $5,000 during an auction?

Does anybody else think about how twisted our priorities have become. Stand in line for something that will probably be obsolete 1 or 2 years from now and costs 10x what it is really worth and can probably get in a few months if patient-but I guess then you wouldn't be the first COOL DUDE! to have one. People are always willing to splurge on non-essentials like entertainment, art, recreation, and cars (even Chargers!). I know the older game systems cost more to make than they sold for but I'm not so sure on this one at $600. You have to realize that the companies make a much higher profit margin on the games than they do on the gaming system itself. It's just like when you get a free $100 printer when you buy a computer only to find out that the $3 print cartridge costs you $39 to replace. I rarely watch TV and almost never play video games so I think it's rediculous to camp out to have the chance to spend money. However, most of the people standing in line would think I'm nuts for flying 5,000 miles to go to a car show, or spending $1,500 on a piece of plastic only to strap it on the front of a car where it's most likely to get busted, or digging through piles of rusty junk to find a bolt or bracket. People do what makes them happy and sometimes they do it to impress others. They aren't really that much different than us. ;0

My friend at work is a hard core gamer, and wanted someone to wait with him. so we hung out at walmart, for 18 hrs. we were 9, 10 inline. they had 10 60GB units and 2 20GB units, walmart let anyone over 12 know they were out of luck and might as well go home. I figured the prices would dive on eBay after they came out, I personally dont need it, I don't even know what I'm gonna do with mine yet, I figured if they were still high on ebay I would sell, to help pay for my kids christmas, or if some one in my family or friend, really wants to seriously get their child one for Xmas, I would let them have it for what I gave for it. My friend just wanted someone to hang out with him, and I've never done anything that crazy b-4, lol.

True something very screwy is going on. I keep getting e-mails from them saying my watched item has been re-listed when I'm not even watching anything. They do seem to be legitimate e-mails though. I don't know what the hell their problem is, but they do need to get their crap in a pile.

What could have happened was that the bids were re-tracted.That happens allot with cars and big $ items on E-Bay. Some people will place a bid on a car, go look at it, then decide they do not want the car & retract the bid so that the seller does lose a higher bid from someone else.
  I had the same thing happen with the AUCTION HAS BEEN RE-LISTED E-mails. I was watching some Mopar model kits and I got one of those e-mails for a kit that I was not even watching. The kit was nice, A vintage 1983 Plymouth Horizon TC-3 model, kind of wacky and raRe. So I bid on it and won the auction. Had the model in 3 days as described. I do not know how they got my e-mail, unless E-Bay sells addresses to big sellers?

I really agree with you on this. People in my area camped out at BB for the chance. Most it looked like were of college age and some retirees.

Not really. In my area there were fewer people in line at the Target than there were PS3s until just a few hours before they went on sale.

I know some of you think it's pathetic but who wouldn't go and sit on a lounge chair for 24 hrs if someone said they would pay them $2k to do it? Would any of you pass on $2k or more for sitting on your a$$ for a day reading a book? I wouldn't do it if the only payoff was a PS3 but for a chance to turn that in to some easy Charger money, why not?
