Is there a way to record songs from an online radio station to the computer?

When I was younger and would go on long trips I would sometimes record a few hours of my favorite radio station onto cassette so I could listen to it during the drive. Now that things have gotten "simpler" with the use of computers I find that it's a convoluted endeavor to do the same thing from a so-called online "radio station" onto CD or just the hard drive. Maybe it's now considered piracy but back in 1985 I don't think anyone cared about people doing that sort of thing with a ratty old am/fm cassette player.

Anyway, is there a way to do this now? Can I somehow record a few hours of my favorite online radio station, burn it to a CD and play it at work?

With the right software, yes. You can record anything going through your soundcard. It's mostly meant for digital recording, such as making your own album, but can be used to copy not only radio but also tapes and LPs and stuff.

As to the best to use, I don't know. I have Roxio Easy Media Creator, which does the job, but I wouldn't know if it's the best or not. In fact, it's not even my favorite thing to use for ripping tracks of CDs that I buy. CDex was better, but it no longer works since XP updated. I do love it for burning MP3s onto CDRs.

If you're using the Mac, Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack is masterful  :icon_smile_big:

that is what i used. i wouldn't sugest it for music because online radio is only like 64 bit. but it works well for talk shows because i can't hear the diffrence between 64 bit talk and 128 bit talk... but i like my music around 192 bit or higher.

Jack an old MiniDisc into your headphone outlet, record  at will. Put the recorded disc into the newer NetMD, and rip into My Music. Old style MD have a dual purpose mic jack. It will accept 1/8 stereo analog, or digital inputs. The NetMD comes with software to play with all your discs, and a USB cable with which to transfer data.
