One tough SOB.

Sad to see him gone.

LOS ANGELES - Tough-guy actor Jack Palance - who made Oscar night history by doing one-armed push-ups on stage after winning an Academy Award for "City Slickers" - died yesterday. He was 87.
The often-menacing star of Hollywood classics, including "Shane," "Sudden Fear," "Man in the Attic" and "Arrowhead," was surrounded by family when he died of natural causes at his Montecito, Calif., home, spokesman Dick Guttman said.

Born Vladimir Palaniuk, the 6-foot-3 Palance was a professional heavyweight boxer who fought under the name Jack Brazzo in the 1940s before serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He suffered facial burns during a flight-training mission in a B-24 and won a Purple Heart.

The bushy-browed son of a Pennsylvanian coal miner took up acting after the war, playing Marlon Brando's understudy for the Stanley Kowalski role in the Broadway production of "A Streetcar Named Desire."

During a punching-bag workout with Brando in the theater's boiler room, Palance accidentally socked Brando in the nose, sending the star to the hospital. Palance stepped in for the ailing lead actor, getting great reviews that helped him land a contract with 20th Century Fox films.

In his early career, the craggy-faced actor often played bad guys and black-hat cowboys.

As obsessed-lover Lester Blaine, he stalked a terrified Joan Crawford in 1952's "Sudden Fear," earning his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

A year later, he got another nomination for his role as the swaggering gunslinger Jack Wilson who bullied the laid-back "Shane" (Alan Ladd) into a duel.

He finally won the award in 1992 for his role as a leathery old cowboy opposite Billy Crystal in the Western comedy "City Slickers."

After a short and slightly awkward acceptance speech, the then-73-year-old dropped to the stage and did one-handed push ups. He later quipped, "I didn't know what the hell else to do."

Oscar host Crystal made the stunt a running joke for the rest of the awards show.
