Just read from CNN SI about the 49'ers possible move from S.F. That goes right in line with what happen with the Oilers; no new stadium = move elsewhere that will...

Report of 49'ers leaving S.F.

Ahem, Santa Clara is a half hour south of San Francisco and evidently will keep the same name.

Hardy equal to the Oilers/Titans, bro.

The point I was making was a NFL team moved to a different city because the formerly hosting city didn't pass on funding a new stadium, not the distance it took to get the new one....  The 9'ers want one, can't get it, so off they go to Santa Clara possibly.. Bud Adams didn't get one for the Oilers, so off he goes to Tenn. to get a new stadium....

equal in cause and effect...........  bro.  :icon_smile_cool:

Hey Troy:

I understand your point, and how that occurred in Houston, but the analysis is not correct for SF.  The Forty-Whiners are not moving because SF won't give them a stiney new stadium.  In fact, neither will Santa Clara to where they're moving.  They're moving because their current site in SF sucks (cold, windy, dangerous and it sorta smells) and does not have the space or infrastructure (freeway & rail access, adjacent shopping & other entertainment) that Santa Clara offers.  Further, the fans in Santa Clara generally have more disposable income than SF.  Exact same deal with our A's, who are likely moving to Fremont.

Go Raiders!

I thought I read that the infrastructure to support the (badly needed) new stadium would cost more than the stadium itself if it were to stay in SF? The old stadium is a relic and one of the worst in the nation. A new stadium would provide space for luxury boxes and other revenue generating amenities. Part of the SF stadium plan included low income housing and a bunch of other construction not related to the stadium itself. Neither SF or Santa Clara is providing any funding (its all private - $800 million or so) but SF did offer to "help" in the cost of infrastructure improvements. There's no open land in the existing area but Santa Clara seems to be a hub of new development and has several other supporting attractions and hotels. The ownership seems committed to staying in the SF area and have not threatened to move to another state or elsewhere in CA. As a business they need to stay competitive with other teams in the league and, like it or not, new stadiums are the hot ticket to boosting revenue, increasing the fan base, and improving the image of the team. We just went through this with both the Reds and Bengals demanding stadiums "or else" - at the same time! We ended up with two new stadiums (one being built halfway on the old one due to lack of acreage) and both were publicly funded with tax dollars. The city skyline looks noticeably better, the stadiums attract a lot of comments and excitement, the whole experience of attending a game has improved, and the ownership of both teams has made a commitment to providing a better product for the fans. Since the Bengals were selling out almost every game even when they stunk they only way to generate more income was to find more things to sell, add more seats, or raise ticket prices. Overall I'd say the moves were good ones even if the approach left a lot to be desired (yes, there were several lawsuits and a lot of bitterness before it was all over). Let's hope that a team funded move will go a lot smoother in SF.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

10 years ago our ex-mayor Slick Willie Brown promised the locals in my area while running for the office that He'd be instermental in building a new stadium and shopping mall at the site of rundown Candelstick park,.. It got him elected sure enuff... Then Eddie D. got run out of town for dubious biz. practices and had to surrender the team to his sister who was more wholesome.. and meanwhile Willie did absolutly nothing..  Since he was allready elected anyhow...
alot of folks in the area still think the world of Willie too...

The 49ers are moving because the York's are too fricken cheap to build a new stadium here. Candlestick site does suck because of the area and the wind. He is not getting his way and he is crying to Santa Clara. I will miss the Santa clara 49ers.

bull

I think they need to find their way to the end zone before they try finding their way to a new city.

Being a 49er fan, I hope they stay and maybe get a new stadium down town. Take the train up. It would be a blast.
