QuoteTheir cars, some valued at up to $40,000, likely will be sold at a public auction, police said.
Man, I'm glad they never got that serious back in my day. It would have really sucked to have my truck sold out from under me.
Although I did my fair share of stupid things back then, I didn't do most of the really stupid stuff that they seem to be doing today.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

I was talking to my fahter about this and all the stories he told me about his street racing days with his Charger. The never raced downtown, they always picked some back road in the country and stationed people to see if anyone was coming down the road.

Not like these kids who race downtown or on the highways. These punks were stupid for meeting in a mall parking lot lol!

I'm sorry, but anyone who races on a public road is a moron. There's a race track for a reason! You're endangering lives, just so you can have a wang measuring contest. And not just your own. It's a public road for a reason, just because it's in the backwood doesn't mean there isn't people using them, living alongside them; with kids who might run out in the street after a wayward ball.

These idiots got just what they deserved. They're losing their cars, along with all the money they have invested in them; and they'll at the least lose their liscense to drive for a while and be on probation, as well as court costs and fines. They should all be tossed in jail for reckless endangerment.

If you want me to race, it's either the track, or go screw a goat. I won't be responsible for running down a grandma who's only crime was to check her mail on some backwoods road.

yes this is very close to where i live and the bad part is they closed down most all the dragstrips around here because of the noise some of which have been here 30 years or more in the contry and now that people have moved in close they want them closed.

I agree, street racing is stupid...BuT....there is no track where I live.  I live on Long Island, NY and the last track we had closed 2 years ago.  If we want to race legally in a straight line, we have to go out of state which means driving the car through NY city, not what anyone wants to do with their classic iron.

While I agree that people should not race on the street, what did the politicians/citizens groups/etc.. think was gonna happen when they closed all of the drag strips?  YOu will not stop young people (and some older ones, I'm 36) from wanting to go fast and these things will continue to happen if the tracks keep closing.  tracks closing is not the only reason for street racing, but it's a big one.  there is, of course, the "danger" "thrill" aspect of street racing too.  not necessarily the danger of hurting someone, but the "you never know when a race is coming" unexpected nature of it that also attracts people.

I have a road that NO ONE lives on!!!!! There are no homes for miles!!!!! We take a few drives up and own the road to be sure that there is no people anywhere close! I understand where you guys are coming from, and I wouldnt even think of doing it anywhere close to other people. Out in North Dakota there are lots of backwoods roads without people.

azraelck

I know of a highway that's got swamps on each side. Very little traffic. We used it to skirt the scales for several years.

There's still plenty of people on it. You have a blowout doing 100, your gator-bait. you try to pass, boom there's a motorhome ot a big truck running the opposite direction.

I'd sooner not race at all than run a public road like that.

Ok I guess I better explain what I meant by backroads. We're talking about a town of 1000 people surrounded by more woods than mosquitoes.  The backroads around my dad's town were old logging roads, hours outside of town so there are no homes, no kids, no traffic, etc.

Racing on a public road is stupid and irresponsible.

But I would suspect 99% of the people on this board have done at least once.

And taking your car for it is just plain crazy.

I suspect the police are going to have different trouble that hits close to home.

People do crazy stuff when they feel that their hands are tied.

Like somebody taking your beloved car for some BS and not being able to do a damn
thing about it.

Somebody should work on a solution instead of create more problems.

Sadly, you will see more guys trying to out run the cops rather then give up their cars, which only makes it worse. The roads are just to crowded today for this stuff. Back in the day's, yeah, I'm one of the old guys, we had a few great places to race where the only one you could hurt was yourself, that the cops would sit and enjoy the races with us. 2 of them still exist and will never change, no side roads, houses or anything of that nature, just about a mile of pure straight, wide road. Rather then have the cops out there, the city just leaves them bumpy so you can't race on them anymore, which is fine. The other thing is we never raced through traffic or did top end runs, just a 1/4 mile run and shut down. That was then and this is now and anyone that does it is nuts, to say the least. Anyone that lives in Queens, NY knows where I'm talking about. Save it for the track, we all should know that.

This is the problem with america right now. You're saying that the cops should have slapped them on the wrist and let them off? You tell me, are you more likely to race again if you just got a fine, or if you lost your car. The fines ain't working, so the law needs to get tougher. The courts are too lenient. It's not BS, they were clearly irresponsible, breaking the law, and endangering others and themselves with sheer stupidity. If that's BS, then I'd hate to live where you live. My poor Cobalt'd be destroyed before I'd get out of the driveway. Forget driving my old truck. I won't bring it within 1000 miles of you.

I'd be curious to see how the laws read in that state. I dont think they can just take your car for street racing. They may have passed a law to do such a thing. Would be curious to know. In Kansas on a DUI they can impound your car for a year. After the year you have to pay the impound fee's to get it back. After a year thats a lot! They dont have to do this everytime. I wonder if something similiar is on the books there for street racing.

The article said some cars were siezed suspecting stolen parts were on the cars. They most likely arrested many people and impounded their cars. Most of those cars were probably bailed out right after their owners were bailed out.

Few realize most insurance companys will drop you on a street racing ticket.  My insurance company will drop me if I race at the drag strip and get caught!  Read the fine print before you go to the track! You may be surprised your car is NOT covered at the drag strip and you could be canceled for even racing there in the first place. I can understand it not being covered while at the strip but they shouldnt drop you for drag racing at the track. I asked my agent about this and he said Insurance companys and "racing" just dont belong together.

As for street racing......is it dumb to do? Yes it is?   Have I done it? Yes I have.  Did we race in a bad area? No we did not.   20 Years ago we would cruise Main Street. Might be some stoplight runs of a half block. If it got serious out of town you went to various locations. Flat Kansas 2 lane blacktops or the 4 lane highway. Always watching for people and cops.   We had an old navy air base here long since closed down.  The run ways were still there and in good shape.  Used to go out there to drag race.  Then they put fences up to keep us out.   Drag racing on the old run ways wasnt the problem. It was all the bullshit that went on there while the racing was going on that probably helped get the fences up. Drinking and vandalizing. Mass crowds. Fights and problems.

It all comes down to liability and money anymore.

If they did seize the cars with the intention of selling them at confiscated auction later then that sounds
like greed to me.
I think if they just slap a huge fine on them, that should do it and they dont get their car back until they pay the fine.

Mean 318

Ok ,I understand where both sides are coming from, and yes I agree "To a point" that racing anywhere but the strip is stupid. Maybe if community's supported the idea of creating "safe" places for kids to do this it would be a different story, but the fact of the matter is 99% of them wont! So that means kids are going to find a place to race, and I don't see a problem with that as long as it is a safe distance out of town, had an unobstructed view on both sides, and has no people near it. IMO the police should go after the kids that race in town and come down on them with the hammer of god! Send a clear message that racing in town will not be tolerated. If you are out in the middle of nowhere and have no chance of hurting anyone than have at it! again this is only my opinion and I don't intend to try and piss anyone off, so please don't think I am. I completely respect everyone here! ;D

BTW, we had a perfect place called "Dump Road" It was a road that ran next to the city dump.  The land was never developed, because if the wind blew across the road "which rarely happened" It was clear for miles on both sides! Now whats the problem with that? :-\

Here in Florida its "Racing on a Highway", its a Felony and they can arrest you and impound your car. The State boys did it to one of the much older guys at our cruise night. He pulled out onto the main road where there is nothing on either side, by himself, in his '33 Ford Coupe, not with another car, he stabbed the throttle and lit it up to about 60 and that was it. They pulled him over, arrested him and impounded his car. He got the car back but it cost him his license for a year and a few thousand in fines. So its not just the "Ricer crowd", but anyone.

Steve P.

Yup, they can nail you hard here in Florida. What kills me is that in my neck of the sand lot, some cops are DOING the racing. The place they go is never messed with until a car flips or goes off the bridge. Everyone knows that when the racing/cops leave, it is time to go in a big way.

You don't think they are carrying radio's do you??

I'm an old street racer. i had stacks of tickets and 6 "Racing on a Highway", tickets 6 points each and
$200 . in the late 70's that was alot of money. i had my cars impounded several times. i also ran for pinks a couple of times .
we would ran into some one on the strip here and play a little . then pull over talk our terms and go down to westside highway . thats an industrial park where there are no houses. it's about 2 miles long and straight. thats where it would get serious. we ran way to hard for the local streets . the cops would stake out the highway every ounce and a while and give us tickets . it got to the point that we would be hanging out at white castle with our cars and the cops would come and tell us, if your gonna run against each other, go down to westside and we'll leave ya alone . i also ran at avenue P in newark . there would be hundreds of people there .  it's to easy now to get a fast car. those little jappers are quick and any assh*** can have a fast little car. we had big heavy american cars .
now i have no points on my license and only run serious on the track . with age comes knowledge . Rene
I won't be wronged, I wont be Insulted and I wont be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to others, and I require the same from them.
