after a couple buddies have lost brakes this year when their master cylinder seals gave out, I'm planning on rebuilding or replacing my master cylinder next year.  and since I don't know how old the brake fluid is, that can be done at the same time.

I was planning on getting the rebuild kit to keep the original master cylinder

does anyone have suggestions on how best to do this?  I looked through all my magazines and can't find an article on how to do it.

thanks for your help!

Master cylinders are pretty basic. The parts that wear out are usually limited to the rubber piston cups inside.
Here's a link that pretty much explains it; http://autorepair.about.com/od/otherodddiyjobs/l/aa092504b.htm
They're rebuilding a newer m/c, but the basic idea is exactly the same as yours.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

The hardest part is getting the damn thing out. One of the nuts is a real pain to get to...while laying on your stomach looking up under the drivers side footwell.

if it is the original  , don't be surprised if the bore of the master cylinder has been badly eaten in to by rust , when i done mine, the in side looked like it had been at the bottom of the Atlantic ocean for 40 years  :o  reason not changing the brake fluid frequently .  the only way when they are this bad is to have them sleeved if you want to save the original . hopefully  yours is ok and just needs a hone like  (Daytonalo) says  :yesnod:

As far as pitting goes , always , always , always use dot 5 [silicone] ! I'm surprised how many people install reg fluid in classic cars . I have been swapping out reg fluid for 15 years with no problems at all , if a person needs to ask why its better , they need to do their homework or get a new hobby
