What Headers to use for 73 Charger with 400?

A friend has a 73 Charger 400 BB and he has had a hard time getting headers that will fit. ANy suggestions??

TTI will fit no problem...  I use Hedmann myself and had to bang #5 pipe to fit around the steering coupling...

Duey has a 440 in his 73 charger and there is a 3/4in height difference between a 400 and a 440. That is usually where the problem lies with most "off the shelf" headers. Most header designs are based off the raised deck block. Allthough the headers will physically bolt up to the heads, the lower deckheight often causes ground clearance issues and interference with some chassis components, namely steering boxes, steering linkage and torsion bars.

Will any of the lower priced headers work on a 73 440? I'm having to cheap out a little so I can get on the road. Advance has a set of flow tecks I think for like 199.

Bob, i don't have much experience with 3rd gen Chargers.....PM Jamey...member "RD" and direct him to this thread. There are several other members here running 440's in 71-74 Chargers so maybe one of them will have a good recommendation. 

My experience with Flowtech in a 2nd gen Charger wasn't so good.

I on used hooker comps on my 73 440 car. ($240 at Jegs) With Eddy heads had to clearence for PS box. Two other dimples for Eddy heads. Dimpled pax side inner fender for #8 tube. Very close to the torsion bars ,can bump them at traffic light in gear. good ground clearennce.

With a 400 they would probably clear torsion bars better, but you would lose about 3/4 inch of ground clearence.

Will replace them with TTI or Schumaker someday.

My 73 SE is not a big block, it is a sb 360, but I got a set of flowtech headers installed at Monroe muffler with all new pipes and flowmaster 40's on it! The car sounded great, but the headers were so low that the car bottomed out and ended up cracking the head! I have some other postings asking questions about this problem myself! If I had it to do over again, I would try to find a better fitting header! Maybe my torsion bars are weak, and that helped cause the car to bottom out...don't know, but I do know that the flowtech headers were about 3 or 4 inches lower, and they had to disconnect the steering linkage and run it through the opening in the header itself to install them!
I had a running driving car before the install, and the car has been down ever since! I hope to have it back on the road with these problems worked out for this Summer's driving!

The Hedman Elites will fit on the 400.  I have used them on my 73 SE with both a 383 and a 440.  I will be upgrading to a better header when I can afford to but for now they work.
