Weather permitting, and provided I can get away from work long enough, I'm making a trip to the 1/8 mile track tomorrow.

This will (hopefully) be my first full passes (at the track anyway).

Last year I made a couple runs down the quarter at IRP, but electrical problems prevented me from making full passes. I limped through the traps with a 14 flat at 87 with a 2.5 60 ft. That was on slipery 17" tires and 3.55 gears.

I've got those demons excised now, so if I can get out of the hole, I should put up some halfway decent numbers.

Weather should be nice and cool. I'll be running on drag radials, but launching fairly soft due to the wussy clutch I've got.

Anybody want to take a guess at ET and mph?

Here's what's under the hood (with a few minor revisions):

The rest of the package consists of a Tremec TK600, 4.10 gears and 28" Nitto 555R drag radials. I'm guessing the package weighs in around 3700 lbs.

I'm conservatively guessing 8.15 at 90 mph. That's assuming a pretty lazy 60 ft.

Cool stuff!

Make sure you get some photos and try to get a video!   :yesnod:

Always thought your car was pretty keen!

Cool deal Jim....go out and have some fun. I'll say 7.60's at 92-94mph.  :icon_smile_big:

Looking forward to the results !  :icon_smile_cool:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Shoot... I'll do a backflip off the roof if I do a 7.80.

I bet you are going to have a blast at the track... Driving your ride at the track is in my op. one of the best things you can do with your clothes on... that makes me wonder, maby the feeling would be even better, if one drove naked??

I do belive you will be under 8sec after a few passes :drive:

Mission accomplished.

Results were a bit disappointing, but not unexpected. I wasn't concentrating on the tree at all. I was focusing on launch technique, so don't bash me too hard on the RT.

Bottom line is I just couldn't get the car to hook. My best run was actually my first with a 8.249 @ 87.49 with a 1.915 60 ft

First time up I wasn't real comfortable. Wearing the helmet really threw me off. Just couldn't hear the motor as I'm accustomed. Hit the 6200 rpm rev limiter on the 1-2 and 2-3. My shift light is set at 5600. ::) Spun out of the hole and wheel hopped real bad on the 1-2 shift.

Second run I slept at the light because I was trying to hold 2000 rpm for the launch. Once again, spun bad and wheel hopped.

For the third run, I dropped the tire pressure from 20 to 17. That seemed to help the wheel hop, but now I was spinning on the 1-2. Completely missed the 2-3 shift and ground the gears hard.

Fourth and fifth run were more of the same. In hindsight, I should have raised my shift point a bit.

Biggest problem is that I can't do a decent burnout with the stick. I wasn't getting any heat into the drag radials. I was really just cleaning them off. Furthermore, with this being a "fun-run" day, the starting line was a mess.

I've got a line lock solenoid sitting on a shelf I've been meaning to install. That's definitely on the list for a winter project. I just need a lot more practice too. Unfortunately, my time was limited today.

Can't wait until next year.

One more timeslip.

Correction: the botched 2-3 shift was on run 2.

so educate me,..
do you set you ride up any different for the 1/8 mile as opposed to the 1/4?...

i've only done three passes in mine at Sears Point,..
first time i blew a motor mount..
then last year at the weds. night drags i did a 15.170 @ 71 mph just getting the feel of it and trying to baby the rear off the line.
my third run was a turd @ 17.565 'n 63 mph, cause i got out of sorts when the one legger twisted me sideways right off the line..
hope to do ALLOT better next time.. im hoping for a 13 flat... Someday..

so anyhow, can you extrapolate your times to the quarter?..   ???

Gearing on my car is pretty much perfect for the 1/8. I light the shift light in 3rd going through the traps.  For a dedicated 1/8 mile car, you tend to gear a bit shorter since your mph is down about 20.

ET conversion factor for 1/8 to 1/4 is 1.57... so my 8.25 converts to a 12.95, although my lousy 60 ft times skews that a bit.  I ought to be quite a bit quicker.

Thanks for the update Jim. Nice work given the circumstances.  ;) The 87mph is encouraging....the engine is making some good power.....typically that kind of 1/8th mile mph will show a 7.80 et.  :icon_smile_big: So it's obvious that engine output isn't the issue and i think you outlined pretty well where the problem lies.  :yesnod:

Getting it to hook is key and dialing in the shift points will help it ET better. It takes time to sort out any new combo and this being your first time making full passes....is exactly that. I wouldn't be too discouraged....the fast(er) times will come. Congrats and hope you had fun....

At least you didn't blow up the engine or lose control and slap the car against the wall.   :yesnod:

Practice makes perfect!

Definitely need to get more runs on the car to figure out how to launch it.

I dug out my line lock solenoid on Sunday. I just need to get some tubing and start plumbing.

Of course, if it starts hooking too much better, I can probably expect the 8 3/4 ring and pinion to start loosing teeth quicker than a meth-head.

I'm sure the car has a 7.80 in it or better, but it will take some development to get it there.

Never heard of them till now. Just went and checked em out...nice tire, great reviews!  Yup  Get Em hotter!  Line locks

I'm with ya on the helmet thing, couldn't hear my car at all. I think I shifted for the open header car next to me a couple of times. now I've got two reasons to put dumps on my exhaust

The Nittos seem to be a good dual purpose street strip tire. They give up some stick against the other drag radials out there, but I wouldn't trust the others for extended street use.

I doubt I'll ever be able to truly "hook" with the Nittos, but they work way better than the Radial T/A or the 17" Nitto 450s I've run previously. I spun all the way through second gear with either of those. WOT wasn't possible until 3rd gear... frustrating.

Unless I upgrade to a Dana and get a better clutch, I don't want to hook too hard anyway. I will never leave at anything over 2000 rpm. I'd like to get the 60 ft into the high 1.70s. Beyond that, I'd need some driveline/suspension upgrades which just aren't in the plans.

Yes it is, actually, but that was back when it had the old American Racing (I think?) wheels on it.  Here's a little pic of it:
