The owner says it is as close as you can get to the movie car and then it shows the interior and a console automatic...

if you watch the video here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGTEN-JmP94

you will see at around 8:13 sec into the chase after bad guy2 loads his shotgun....bad guy1 appears to shift.

FastbackJon

In everything I've ever read it was a 4 spd.

Besides, just look at the 1:17 mark on that link, you see the 4spd shifter knob sticking up from the low camera angle.

Someone knows their bullitt info  :icon_smile_big:  That's my car and yes, one car in the movie WAS an automatic.  They used the auto car for cruising the street in the first few shots of the movie and kept the other 4 speed car on hand for the chase scene.  The number 1 reason as to why they had one auto car?  In the original script, they planned to jump the charger off of the Golden Gate bridge.  An automatic was needed to set the throttle and hit the ramp at 45 mph. They couldn't find a test dummy to shift the car to it's launch point :-\ so they ended up with the screwy crash in Brisbane.  Mayor Alioto declined the request to jump the car from the bridge.  The automatic car DID survive and a member of the crew still owns the car.  Location today is unknown  ;)

Charger #2- 4 speed car made it's way to a salvage yard on 3rd street in San Francisco.  It was sent off to a scrapper and is most likely a 78 Oldsmobile by now.

That is a beautiful car, but how is it a replica?  that word replica puzzles me a bit.  In my demented mind, a replica, in terms of movie/tv cars, is something made to copy a customized car.  like a general lee, mad max falcon, batmobile, munster mobile, etc...

anybody with the right amount of money could have gone to the dealer and bought the exact same thing.  likely hundreds of copies were made by the factory.  If it had aftermarket wheels, some sort of stripe that was not available, something....like the dirty mary crazy larry charger.  Then it would make sense to me to call it a replica when someone drives by in one that looks exactly like it.

it does not take away from the beauty of the car, and most of us, me included, would gladly take 10 direct kicks to the balls in exchange for ownership of this car.  very nice car. t/a from smokey and the bandit,  Ferarri from Magnum PI, or Countach from cannonball run.   all beautiful cars, just like the charger in bullit, and all have one thing in common, the only tool you would have needed to recreate one back in the day was a pen to sign the loan papers.

again, I think it's a great car and I don't want you guys thinking I'm bashing it.  I just think it would have a little more noteriety if it was a duplicate of something that was not bone stock.

You raise a good point.  No argument there.  But, the car came with a stripe when new.....I deleted it.  The car had white interior when new, I changed it.  So I MYSELF made a replicar by doing these modifications to match the car in the movie.  When I set out to build my car, I didn't desire using the cookie cutter 14's with stock hubcaps.  A lot of folks don't.  Again, I would prefer to roll on some magnums but it wouldn't look like the builltt car.  I even have the RDR 838 CA BLACK PLATES!  Same plate in the movie.  There are a lot of guys that claim to have a bullitt Charger replica, but have the wrong tips, crager wheels, etc...My car could have been used in the movie if it were back in 68.  I accomplished in my mind what is called a replicar.

Now if you are talking Bullitt Mustang, yes, tons of mods were made to that car.  They made dual exhaust with glasspacks, torque thrusts, coupe side mirrors, blacked out front grill etc...  Maybe I should call mine a stock car that looks like the bullitt charger?  lolol
Another good point you raise....the smokey and the bandit car.  There is a guy out here in the city with one.  Every single time I see it I think, "Smokey and Bandit" and replicates the original movie car if the wheels are correct, gold stickers are correct etc....

I have a conenction with the movie, in my mind it's a replicar.  Thanks for the compliments.  Much appreciated.

FastbackJon

If you watch the video again you can see the exhaust come out like during a four speed shift from the Charger at 8:40 and from the Mustang at 7:23.

you raise valid points of your own, maybe replica should mean "changed from as delivered to purposely look like something else"  I painted my charger and the emblems were shot, so I just bought R/T emblems and threw them on, and the stripe too.  mine's probably a replica too..

Just don't go treating that bad boy like those dudes did in the movie.
