rear end housing question

     What is the best way to clean up 30 + years of dirt and grime on a rear axle housing?  I have it all disassembled, I am going to put in a sure grip and new gears.  I have already dug around with a screwdriver and a puty knife to some of  the debris off.  Can I powerwash it?
