Charger Convertible...am I sick????

Friends,

I think I must be sick.  I just saw some pictures on the internet of a 1970 Charger Convertible...AND I LOVE IT.

I realize that many in the old school think it is a crime to scalp the top off of arguably the most beautiful muscle car but I have to admit, the thought is starting to cross my mind.  I know I am biased because I am a convertible nut and have owned a number of them in my life.

Has anyone on this site done this to their car?  Am I guilty of a crime if I do this to mine?  My 70 Charger is great but the roof is almost a total loss with the rust.  I love my charger but it is certainly not an original so long term resale value is really not an issue.

I saw the picture on a link in the 70 Charger Registry website.  If anyone is interested, I will check on the link and post it here later today.  Just looking for some constructive comments.

I have seen 3 of them up close and personal and talked with the people who did them. Two were Satellite convertables to begin with and dressed in Charger sheetmetal and one was a 70 charger with a Coronet roof assembly and that guy worked his tail off on that car.Not saying that the Satellite was a piece of cake but it was an easier rout.I do crash work for a living and it still is a long job to do a convertable Charger.

That orange 70 was one of the guys I talked with and the car was a Satellite to start with.

I love that car & a handful of other Charger ragtops that have been built. I've seen several in person, & have pictures of about 5 or 6 others. I've always wanted to build one myself,   but won't. My Coronet ragtop was to be the base car, & the Charger body was to be the donor, but after having both cars side by side & comparing all the differences, including the structure you can't see, it's way beyond my capabilities. The nose & doors are bolt on, but the back half has so many differences, if I started the project I'd be in over my head & ruin 2 cars in the process.

Welcome to the site, btw.

the article in MCG said the guy used the convertible top mechanics from a cadilac.  I have to admitt it looked real cool.

Now that I think about the Orange '70, I believe that belongs to the guy who works with Pam & Mike at Dayclona. If it is his, I'm sure he's posted on here already.

If that's the case, no wonder it's so well done. Those guys are the poop!

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

I don't care for the look of any of the B-body verts with the top up.  That being said, I think the roofline of the Charger for any of the first 3 gens is among it's most distinctive features.  Removing that feature for the benefits of the appearance with the top down seems like a bad thing to me personally.  If you like the grille and taillights, isn't it easier to just get a Coronet vert and put the Charger front and back on it?

i'm sure you can find a charger with a bad roof cheap. then get the saws all out . sounds like fun  :METAL:

You are far from being sick! I wanted to do that to by 69 Charger when she broke in half from rust. Nothing left too lose so to speak. Have a PIC of a Concept car called Super Charger from around 1970 or so. Was made in two a 2 seter la Thunderbrid, Daytona Nose and Chrysler 300 Hurst Wing.

Man the body line looked great with the top off, the two seater, wing and Daytone nose did not look right. But the rest should have been Mopar history! Good it looked cool.

What stopped me? Well that was 2 fold.

1. I love the roof lines of a Charger, wanted to cut off the roof but yet be able to keep the roof like a early Vets. You start loooking at the rear queatrer's and sail panel's and real start thinking I want the best of both worlds. It will slow you down, don't forget the rear package tray.

2. Stiffen up the body with out a roll cage. When I wanted to do it was around 1995, I now know how to do it but that was 10 years ago.

If you have the ball's go for it but not for the weak of heart. But you will have something that most people will never see.

Fake drop top Daytona or Superbird, that is not right! Making what Ma Mopar should have done, well that is just sitting history right.

I don't have any pics, but back when they were new, the local Plymouth dealer's son had a 69 or 70 Road Runner that they had dealer installed a Superbird rear wing onto.  No other parts, just the wing.  I think it was a ragtop but that's so long ago that I don't want to say for sure.  No idea what happened to the car.

I really like the look of the Charger convertibles I've seen pictures of. If I could find a solid 68-70 Coronet convertible donor car, I'd definitely do this to my '68  :yesnod:

Well, it isn't the most solid..........but it's a start. I wouldn't mind seeing it converted, that was my intention for a while. ? :D
